116808 2003-01-27 22:16:00 Hey there everyone.

My computer runs linux, and all the other computers in the house run windows (XP and 98). I have easily managed to network them (and can ping etc), but I am left asking 'what now?'. How do I easily access the other computers shares? What programs are people using which are popular for networking?

Thanks,
Jonathan Giles

116809 2003-01-27 22:23:00 What distro of linux are you on?

Are wanting to access shares from the Linux PC or the Doze PC's?

You've got smb (SAMBA) setup all perfect then?

Samba is used on Linux to share the folders.. If you post back with a bit more details, I'd be happy to help out :)

Cheers

116810 2003-01-27 22:32:00 I'm running SuSE 8.0.

I am not entirely sure I've got Samba running - I wouldn't know where to start with that....

I'm wanting to access shares both ways.

Cheers,

116811 2003-01-27 22:41:00 Alrighty, lets see here....

Samba.. Should come with SuSE 8, you may have to install it, or just download it from the homepage (googe search for samba download).

Install that...
You'll now need to edit the smb.conf file, with root permissions.

a few things to note:
the smb.conf file should be very well documented... it is in Redhat!
Share level should be set to share
and try a share like this:

[My Share1]
comment = your comment here
path = /tmp
read only = no
public = yes

Save it and then restart the samba service. Im not too sure how to do this in SuSE8, but I use RedHat 8 and theres a CLI way of doing it via chkconfig I think, otherwise there's the temp way:L
service smb start
service smb stop
and the ever so useful:
service smb restart

Hope this helps ya, just play around with it a bit. You may wanna search Pf1 for Samba and see what pops up :-) Ive asked this myself before :-)

Cheers
