117315 2003-01-30 09:02:00 Hi Team

The 24x CD rom in Old Faithful is starting to get flakey so I thought I'd swap over the newish 52x from my W2K machine and take the plunge with a CDRW in the more modern box .

After extensive research (and reading most of the CDRW post history on F1) I decided to buy a Samsung 48-16-48 but they are like hen's teeth to find as a retail pack . Just about all listings are for OEM and in fact I only found one retail source which was PB Technologies .

So, just how seriously is this "OEM for sale with new systems only" bizzo taken?

Also, is there a difference in the package contents in terms of bundled software and disks/cables etc?

I'm looking for an Auckland source, preferably one that I can drop in to during my travels as freight etc soon makes an out of town purchase more expensive . There appears to be about $20 difference between OEM and Retail pack so you can see why I'm curious about what you get and don't get besides a flashy cardboard box . ?:|

Best prices I have found are $120 excl GST for OEM and $139 excl for what I presume is a retail pack .

Another conundrum, nobody quotes model numbers but checking around it looks like this unit is an SW-248B as that is the only 48-16-48 I can find .

Any suggstions please?

Cheers

117316 2003-01-30 09:17:00 My experience with OEM has been that they often come with -- nothing.

However my LG 40x12x40 (OEM in a system recently bought) came with Nero.

I have bought a Zip drive OEM, and all I got was the drive, no screws, cables etc.

The LG certainly has a quality to it, even the drawer operation is silky smooth. Very quiet drive as well, and not one coaster.

117317 2003-01-30 10:34:00 I bought the same model samsung that you are after > BillyT.
I bought it OEM. Got Nero burning ROM 5.5 with it. I also bought it with no other purchase.
OEM products normally come with bare packaging and normally drivers etc.
I think only M$oft requiries a certain level of new parts purchase before you can be able to purchase their quality ( lol ) products.
Got my CDRW from

117318 2003-01-30 20:31:00 Thanks for that.

I wondered about the "OEM" sales restriction, I'll phone the closest shop and ask. I didn't want to appear too ignorant so that's why I posed the question.

Little devil, (may I call you 333, which I assume is a younger sibling of 666 ]:)) what extras if any did you need to buy for installation?

Cheers

117319 2003-01-30 20:37:00 Ok i have the samsung 240B which is the 40-12-40x model.
I got it from ETC computers in Auckland.
I would say it was OEM because it came in a plastic bag, no box. However on the invoice it stated that there is a 1year warranty on the thing. So I'd imagine ETC would service it if ever something went wrong.
It came with Nero 5.5 and an instruction manual for installation.
It uses standar M$ drivers for installation, so no disk is required for that.

117320 2003-01-30 22:47:00 Thanks roofus .

Do you like it, and is it reasonably quiet? I was looking at ETC too as they are quite close to my office . Glad it comes with a manual or I'd be unable to RTFM properly and where would that get me . :D

Cheers
