January 28, 2003 Posted: 12:19 AM PST

Perth - West Australian police, acting on a tip off from an anonymous source, raided a gathering known to insiders as WALAN .

The event took place at an establishment described as a "leisure" center in the suburb of Craigie . Police were informed that hundreds of mostly young men would be attending, some bringing thousands of dollars of "gear" . Whilst most claimed it was for personal use, others admitted it was largely about showing off, proving they had the best stuff .

Some were as young as 16, such as one juvenile, who asked to be known by the alias "insomniac" rather than have his name revealed . Whilst he was later unavailable for a full interview, it is rumoured he has never scored in his life . A police officer remarked "It's terrible how they get kids hooked on this kind of thing before they're old enough to have fully experienced life on the outside . " Another officer stressed the importance of avoiding drugs at all costs, "whilst it's true a lot of the bad effects of mainstream drugs are caused by not knowing what goes into them, cleaner drugs such as linux are often even more damaging to social development" he warned .

Police saw the majority of the room panic as the raid began, stashing circular objects into bags and tapping furiously on keyboards . The raid yielded only the odd piece of illegal pr0n however . "I don't know how they pulled this off, but by the time the dust settled all we could find was a bunch of computers and some compact discs" said Det . Donna Piker . Responding to criticism that the police were out of touch, she went on "Whilst this first raid was not a great success, we'll keep pursuing these LAN Parties until those kids are out on the street where they won't cause trouble" . It is believed the police crackdown will focus on the ringleaders next time, who call themselves "admins" . It is believed there maybe a committee pulling the strings behind all of this, but they keep their identity so secret even the admins are unaware of it .

Police also admitted they were no closer to discovering how "Flame Wars" began between "lanners" as the youths referred to themselves, but believed the WALAN organisation was partly responsible for encouraging communication between different groups . There are known to be several gangs, with some of the youths being members of more than one . The biggest groups seem to be the "intel" and "amd" gangs, who have been at war for over a decade, whilst "nvidia" and "ATi" have been growing in recent years, the former benefiting from its absorbtion of the "3dfx bois", once one of the most infamous names on the street .

Reports that the event had females attendees remain unconfirmed and are believed to be greatly exagerated . "Some of em may look like girls but that's just their muscles wasting away from too many hours in front of the computer" said one self-confessed former lanner .

lmao ;)

117109 2003-01-30 04:14:00 Now that's damn funny! :D

Seriously though, looking at the news clip that segfault pointed to, can you imagine the fear a non-geeky parent would have if their geeky child announced one day: "Mum, I've got a confession to make. I'm using PHP (or ASP or HTML, etc) and I'm addicted to it."

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't be putting ideas in certain people's heads here.... :p
