117060 2003-01-29 04:38:00 Is there a site somewhere, where I can type in a program, say Age of Empires, or WinZip for example, and it will tell me if it works on Linux? mejobloggs (264)
117061 2003-01-29 04:51:00 You mean by using something like wine (www.winehq.org) or natively under Linux? Dolby Digital (160)
117062 2003-01-29 05:02:00 I don't know of one, but try using google: "Age of Empires" linux might give a lead. (WinZip is easy: you wouldn't bother ... there's an open source version of Zip for Linux. It will be installed in any distribution -- try "man unzip").

They won't run natively and there's a fair amount of work in porting a big game. There is a fair amount of interest in games, so more will come.

I know Age of Empires is "Muesli compatible"; I've just bought a packet of muesli with A of E included :D

117063 2003-01-29 05:10:00 this site might help (www.linuxcompatible.org) tweak'e (174)
117064 2003-01-29 06:19:00 Well if age of empires uses direct x, then you'll need Wine-X (www.transgaming.com) a Wine (http:) (windows compatibility layer for Linux) plug-in, another handy wine plug-in is www.codeweavers.com]crossover ( [url) office[ nz_liam (845)
117065 2003-01-29 08:18:00 Be sure to check the homepage for compatibilty first.. Ive got a copy of it and tried running Jedi Knight... Didnt work, but that's prolly coz I couldnt update the drivers for my GF4 in Lycoris :-)

Just dont be too dissappointed if it doesnt work. Try buying a few games that were designed to run on linux, like UT2K3... Mind you, there have been reports of games running on the Q3 Engine to have upto a 300% performance increase!! Pretty Major!!!

For utilities like winzip you will be better off using a native linux

117068 2003-01-29 19:43:00 Why go to all this trouble to get a program to work in Linux? If comuters are your hobby play by all means, but if you want to be able to switch on and do something stick with windows.
And people who say that windows gives all sorts of problems obviously have very little idea on how to install and set it up.
If you can't get windows to work properly then you certainly won't do any better with Linux.

117069 2003-01-30 04:29:00 I just muck around on computers, and I like trying new stuff, and I have never tried Linux, so I thought I might try it.

But im not sure I can be bothered, because I have never formeted or patition my hard drive before, so it could be too much hassle.
