117053 2003-01-29 04:30:00 Just recently a program called windows explorer is trying to access the internet. Fortunately my firewall has stopped it from doing so, but few questions remain. What is windows explorer? Is it part of Windows ME?
If not how come I have it, also considering that it was not there before?
I find it strange, also, that it is trying to go online.........Should I delete it?
And if I delete it will I damage the OS?
Thank you in advance for your help.

117054 2003-01-29 05:04:00 Windows Explorer would the program that you use when you look around the files and folders on your harddrive.

I wouldn't recommend deleting it unless you had a VERY GOOD reason to do so. It's rather integral to the running on windows.

what you use to find files/navagate your way around your drive/pc.

> Is it part of Windows ME?

yes

>Should I delete it?

no, as windows will no longer work.

explorer can act as Internet Exploreer, however i prefer to block it from the net.

just make sure you have your antivirus upto date as it could be a virus but going by your newbie questions i would guess your just clicked a url in explorer.

117056 2003-01-29 05:11:00 Windows Explorer is the application/program that lets you browse your computer, just like My Computer does (which is Win Explorer really) . It is part of all Windows versions and it would have always been on your computer .

I have also noticed my Win Explorer wanting to go off to goodness-knows-where on the internet and I don't allow it to do so . As far as I'm concerned it has has no business doing so and my firewall is set to not allow it out .

Don't delete it (I doubt you'd be able to anyway), just block it . You might want to take a look at this thread ( . computing . net/security/wwwboard/forum/942 . html" target="_blank">www . computing . net) just for interest .

117057 2003-01-29 05:14:00 It probably wants to go to Redmond and tell Bill what you've been up to, Susan. Good thing you don't let it. :D Graham L (2)

117059 2003-01-29 07:33:00 It certainly is not a virus (I think) for I scan for viruses regularly with McAfee and PestPatrol. Anyhow, it is a relief to know that it is part of the pc. I promise I won't delete it and follow your advice of not letting it go online. Thank you very much. Sanco (683)
