117264 2003-01-30 05:52:00 I work with text a lot on my computer, and currently have a really horrible old 15" or so CRT screen. I am looking at upgrading to a 19" screen that would be better for text viewing, and I have my eye on an LG studioworks 900B - I read in the Nov. PCworld that this screen has excelent image quality and displays crisp text. I've found it on the net via pricespy.co.nz for about $500.

Any other suggestions? I'm on a budget of up to about $800 or $900.

117265 2003-01-30 06:44:00 Compare the text quality of a 15" LCD Screen (They have the same viewable area as a 17" CRT) before you decide.

I used to use a 17" CRT, but the improvement with a good LCD screen is stunning. I have changed over to them exclusively and find any CRT based display a bit blurry by comparison.

As a bonus, they dont have the "subliminal flicker" caused by refresh rates that CRT's have either. Your budget would encompass a Philips unit, which is good quality.

117266 2003-01-30 08:36:00 Just remember that a LCD may not be as good for games and movies if you ever do that.

... just from what I've read though.

117267 2003-01-30 08:46:00 Actually JM, while that was very true with the earlier LCD (and still is for the cheaper ones) it does not seem to affect the good ones available now. TV on mine is superb. Games show no problems, the response time appears more than adequate. godfather (25)

I know it's frequently said that a 15 in LCD is the same surface area as a 17in CRT. I've never managed to work that out given a 17in CRT is usually about an effective 15.9 in ie 253sq ins in area whereas a 15in LCD is 225sq in

Viz the typical 17in is 12.6% larger in area or am I being picky

The LCD's I have are 15.3" effective viewable area.
When I had a 17" CRT it had a viewable area of 15.8"
The effective area was slightly less than this, there are often some small limitations to making the picture always fit to 100% of the viewable area.(EHT regulation errors causing blooming, minor pincusion effects etc)
So the effective area was virtually identical, in my case.
There are minor differences between brands of course.
Also quality of display on a CRT can suffer at the extremities of the scan, where the LCD is unaffected as there is no "scan" to speak of.

Also LCD's are often digitally driven with no analogue conversion, with its associated losses of quality, whereas most CRTs are analogue.

Prices of LCDs are dropping to the extent you probably wont see many CRTs in 3-5 years

117271 2003-01-31 01:35:00 I heard a rumor (am I allowed to spread rumors here? :-)) that at the end of the 1st quarter of 2003 the prices on LCD screens are going to drop dramatically. So much so that you should see almost every new PC sold with one! CYaBro (73)

Forgot to say that this is not really true anymore. I have used (and so have 2 other mates) a 15" Viewsonic LCD for the last 6 months and played games and movies on it with no quality loss. Just make sure if you buy an LCD screen that the Pixel Response time is 25ms or less and also the Contrast Ratio should be at least 400:1 for a nice bright picture from almost any angle.
