I've been playing with Mandrake since I got it as a cover CD on the November APC. Oops, can I mention that mag here? I'm actually pretty impressed with the reasonable ease with which it loaded up. About the only problem's I've struck are it didn't like my PCI SCSI card which meant that I had to do a network install.

I had the same problem with SuSE, but rather sadly Redhat (7.0 onwards, anyway) has never had a problem.

The other hick-up was with the automatic update feature during the install. Sometimes it worked and then other times it would jump passed while it was attempting to find the ftp server. I got around that by setting up a download server for the updates and will rsync the others.

I REALLY like the way it asks you if you definitely meant to have all those servers running! Something that none of the other distros check (haven't tried Redhat 8 though). That was always my biggest worry with linux. It wasn't until you'd finished the install that you suddenly discovered that you had sudo and an ftp server loaded.........

Now what was that about RAID I saw as I started the install........

Ive never had troubles with Redhat 8 on the few SCSI cards Ive tried it out on (When NT4 and Win2K Server both did...).

The part I like the most about RedHat 8 is its extremely nicely done installer! Much better than any of the MS ones, a whole lot more user friendly and its so obvious they've put a lot of thought into making it clean and user-friendly :D

117706 2003-02-03 03:25:00 One thing I didn't like about Redhat was the rather large number of patches that you needed to install on a "new" release. What is version 8 like in that respect? Hopefully you aren't one of those people that don't upgrade with the latest patches!

SuSE 8.0 which I picked up in April can still be updated in a couple of hours via dial-up and they now have a new twist where you just download patches rather than completely new RPMs.
