| 117612 | 2003-02-01 05:25:00 | Hi People, I can get a 5200rpm HDD (4 Gig) for free and am thinking of 'slaving' this with my 9 Gig 7200rpm HDD. I have read "somewhere" about devises in the same IDE cable being restricted by the slowest devise. Will this make that much difference? Current system config: P3, 450mhz 256mb RAM Primary IDE: 9 Gig HDD (master) Zip100 (Slave) Secondary IDE: DVD-ROM (Master) CD-RW (Slave) Thanks for any comments. |

THE RPM of the drive 5400/7200 is the speed at which it spins the faster one results in a quicker seek time, which means it gets to the info required quicker. Then there is the cable speed, this can be 33/66/100/133 for 66 and above you need an 80 core IDE cable. If one drive runs at 33 and the other runs at 100 then they will do so, even if they are on the same cable. Although transfering from one drive to the other on the same cable will result in it going at the lower speed, primarily because you can only go as fast as the slowest device. Note your computer probably only has the capabilities to allow 33, maybe 66 if your lucky. These numbers such as 66/33 etc are comonly refered to as ATA or UDMA eg, ATA33, UDMA33 |

| 117617 | 2003-02-01 07:11:00 | the 5400 rpm drive wont slow down the 7200 one. sometime you can get a slowdown IF they are way different ata spec for eg a cd drive and a ata66 hardrive. general rule of thumb is to keep harddrives and cdroms on seperate ide cables. |

Susan B, thanks for the pointer to thread: Best 40 G hard drive, I had checked the FAQ and searched on various 'strings' but missed that. Dak2, as you had picked up on I was looking at ditching the zip100 as I typically only use it as 'temporary' storage for downloads and some were to chuck stuff to check for viruses occasionally. Tweak'e, interested in the 'ata card' comment. Can you point me to more info/explanation? Is this an opportunity to keep my Zip and add the extra HDD? Thanks again everyone. |
