117403 2003-01-31 19:27:00 used to use zip drive, now use leadtek memory disk, it's about the size of a cellphone, has 128mb storage, no drivers required except for win 98, very user friendly and portable. In computer terms zip drives are 'yesterdays' news, although in saying that, they are still a convenient backup tool as they hold more than a floppy. cheers greenglass (1432)
117404 2003-01-31 20:56:00 I guess the idea was a good one.. A giant floppy, but the fact that not many people had them wouldnt have been to good.. They just dont seem to have that edge over CD-R's, seeings EVERY computer nowadays has a CD-ROM, Even server do sometimes...

Do they cost much though (Zip drives/disk's)???

117406 2003-02-01 01:17:00 We got our 100mb internal zip drive many years ago when CD writers were still in the stone age. Still use it. With over 60 spare zip disks we still use them for backing up day to day stuff such as emails, address books, work files which we can copy to on the spur of the moment.

The CD has its place though for backing up big files and making drive back ups.

117407 2003-02-01 01:44:00 A Zip drive is MUCH more convenient for transferring some files if both computers do have a zip drive. -=JM=- (16)
117408 2003-02-01 01:47:00 Why's that??? Chilling_Silence (9)
117409 2003-02-01 02:40:00 The computer at work has a zip drive for the daily backups . We've had it for four years and it was purchased because CD writers were way more expensive then and the slug of a PC wouldn't hack a writer anyway .

It works well -- quite a few times files accidentally deleted off the hard drive have been rescued off the zip backups . I think one of the big advantages of a zip drive is its ability to be easily transported between virtually any computer using the Zip Tools' Guest feature (or whatever it's called) . Thus, if the work computer crashed big time and I needed to I could bring the zip drive home, rescue the files off the disks and work on them on my computer .

The next computer/s we get - soon, hopefully - will have a CD writer on at least one of them so the zip drive will probably be retired to "light duties" then .

Also, a friend of mine has an old Pentium that she can't reformat because she's got too many large files that won't fit on floppies . The PC is too old for a writer so her only option is to get a zip drive if and when she reformats . (Five+ years without a single reformat -- no wonder the poor thing gasps for air with a quick walk around the block! :O)

117410 2003-02-01 03:51:00 > Why's that???

Well it's a lot quicker to write a sub 100meg file to a zip than it is to a CD. Ofcourse now there are faster cd-writers than when zip first came out. But the lead-in/out on a CD-Writer is a killer I find, it takes ages.

Zip is just REALLY easy if you want to transfer some files. There really quick as well.

117411 2003-02-01 03:54:00 What about Nero InCD and the likes?!? Chilling_Silence (9)
117412 2003-02-01 04:17:00 can't say I've ever used the InCD (or similar) packages.

I wouldn't recommend someone to go out and get a Zip drive now.... but before hand yes definitely, they're great.
