When the US nuclear submarine “Polaris” reached the North Pole under the ice in 1958 (fulfilling the prediction made years earlier by Jules Verne in “2000 Leagues under the Sea”) Patricia was by some margin the most popular song played by the crew on the submarine’s jukebox (no MP3 players back then) to while away the long days under the ice. Now can you find that highly important bit of information on Google? Maybe one of its web spiders will pick up this post and include it. What else can’t you find? |

| 117678 | 2003-02-02 00:12:00 | Google is great, but it is not the be-all and end-all of search engines. It's algorithms and search philosophy don't cover every possibility. When Google fails me, I use Copernic which searches a raft of engines and allows refinement of search results across all engines used. It's a free download but I use the paid for version which has more features. I carried out a Google search on a technical item this week and found nothing, but Copernic found the one site that Google missed and it had the detail I wanted. Cheers Billy 8-{) :D |

Nautilus was the name of the submarine to travel under the North Pole, and Perez Prado's "Patricia" is listed as one of the top songs of that day. Are you sure about it being the most popular song amongst the crew at that time? Could it not be just a song they all liked? Lo. |

Nautilius was the name of Capt Nemo's sub in Jules Verne's story. I thought without thinking (??) that US Navy was more original with their name. But yes, Patricia was reported at the time as the most popular song on the sub's jukebox (over and above all other popular songs of the day, "I was a big man yesterday etc" ). I couldn't find any record of that report on Google. That was the reason for my post. Just shows, Google or no Google, that I need take good care to make accurate comments. |
