117566	2003-02-01 04:14:00	Hi ya Me and my mate were talking about how it'd be cool to network our two pc's up. I thought i'd come here and see if its possible. We live about 300m away from each other (in a rural area) with another house, a hedge, and a few trees, o, and walls of our houses, in between us. Is there a way we could network them. We are thinking wireless - cables out of Q - we on diff sides of road. How far does a typical "home wireless reciver/sender" reach? can u get "boosters" or something to put in between? also, do u need a direct line of sight for them to work? Does anyone have some product recomendations or places with more info on this topic? Also, we aren't going to do it if the price is high (like a $1000). And is there anything else we should no, do, or don't do before we go a head. thanks in advance. 117570	2003-02-01 04:35:00	yeah,..... well we don't, however, my mate has just said tht he has a 3m "steel rod" on the top of his garage roof with coaxial cable running up it - he said it was used as an antenaa once, would this help in anyway? cheers	fergie (424)

117572	2003-02-01 04:38:00	I have seen a system running aver 1.5Km in the city. the dude made a 6 inch Aerial (look a bit like a sky aerial) for both systems and bolted them to the buildings pointing at each other, then he ran TV type cable back to the computers. he said only about 80% of packets get through but it did allow file sharing and such like. BTW: there was a nice article in "silicon chip" late last year (november or december) about making a high power wireless network aerial for very cheep. it was aimed at "drive by hacking" but it is much the same.	robsonde (120)
117573	2003-02-01 04:39:00	Hi fergie Line of sight is not 100% essential if you have enough signal to start with, but unless you can either access some high gain antennas or have the skills to make them, plus some very low loss cable, you are probably out of luck. The distance is not an insurmountable barrier, communication has been established between computers several kilometres apart (over water) but both antennas would have to be mounted fairly high up to maximise signal strength and if the intervening house has a corrugated iron roof, it is probably hopeless. You could mount low and try to squirt the signal through the house but that depends on what materials lie in the path through the house. Unfortunately this proposal is a technological challenge that really requires you to have reasonable knowledge of the principles involved. Cheers Billy 8-{) :(	Billy T (70)
