117469 2003-01-31 20:53:00 (1) Does anybody in the group often send their computer away for repair?
(2) and if so, how long is it away for?
(3) and do you become procrastinated and fearful about picking the repaired item up?

This question was posted as a lot of television repair customers ring up and say "you have had the television in of four weeks now, why are you not fixing it?" (but with a ruder tone to their voice, and the days of getting a thankyou from customers are over) they are told "for every day that television has been in the workshop, we have done as much as we can do for that day to get it fixed" but they refuse to understand, the biggest hold up is waiting for parts on back order, I think the places who sell parts, keep their sock down to a real minimum as they do not wish to dump thousands of dollars worth of stock as it becomes updated and useless. And it beats me why the Electronic service trade (originations) can not bring this 21st century problem to the attention of the public so they can understand were we are "abused by the manufacturers who do not wont there products fixed outside warranty now" I could say more but that would get away from the computer theme the reason for this web site.

117470 2003-01-31 21:03:00 Quite honestly..
We got our family PC's mobo upgraded after a power surge which nuked it and then CPU.
We sent it in (They didnt trust me with a screwdriver back then.. Ive come a long way in 3-4 months :-)) and got it back, only the modem kept on being troublesome.. We sent it back 3 times and they replaced it once and then said the next two times it was our fault!

I bought a WinModem real cheap, $25 or something, and installed that.. No problems what-so-ever since..

But apart from that, I havent sent a PC in to a shop in my life!

I've always been the one to do the upgrade/repairs :-)

As for stock... It depends on where you go!

I built a PC and found the best pricing from QMB.co.nz
I deposited the money into their account on the thursday at 4:30ish, expecting it to go through at midnight like it always does (Web Transfer).
I rang on friday morning to ask when itd arrive (Id paid about $4.5 for postage) across auckland, and he said it'd already been posted and it would arrive "soon"...

It arrived that afternoon, so Ive never really had a problem with time taken, and products not being in stock! I wouldnt buy unless it was in stock though :-)

HTH

Cheers

117471 2003-01-31 21:30:00 tv parts are becomeing a bit of a joke. from what i hear various companies are supplying parts from assuie or asia, ie they don't hold any nz stock. tv repairs are slowly becoming a dieing trade :(

with computer parts they are easy to get due to people making computers from parts, upgradeing etc(ie heaps of places hold stock). however because of the high speed product cycles getting the same part (to replace one that died) can be difficuilt, however its usually possible to replace it with a newer model.

117472 2003-01-31 21:47:00 Sound card replaced after 10 months. told sent back to manufacturer. they then gave me other stuff in shop. not sure if walkman was close to the PC .... FREE

Speakers - the bundled cheap ones. one with no sound. Use own speakers.

Keyb - 2x $60. too much gaming those early yrs.

Mouse 1x $80

Floppy Mitsumi $60 then got a Panasonic. After Quay Comp did not honour warranty. Said device was not their's!

CD ROM Diamond Data 24X $140 those days. Again Quay Comp's explanation. Fortunately the other parts not break down since they were also bought from the same ding dong.

14" Monitor after 10yrs too much green stuff. did not have a bultin degauser. Did try degause with other monitor but it resetted after each reboot. Bought a new 17" LG.

2x PCI LAN card not sure if its the laptop thou. def not the cable thou... still active.

Power supply of my own fault by they replaced it for free.

Laptop - IBM replaced HDD overnight and the CD ROM when the door flap was loose.

The TV's - one lasted over 10yrs. Another lasted 3-4 yrs so we chose not to fix.

117474 2003-02-01 01:38:00 These sort of things have continually been talked about in the "Serviceman" columns of Silicon Chip and the now defunct Electronics Australia magazines.
Im thinking more of TVs...
Maybe its up to the servicemen to say to the customers it could take weeks to get parts etc.
Everything is getting more and more complicated and integrated, yet proportionately cheaper so that as Tweake says its hardly worth the effort repairing, and there cant be much profit in it these days, in a few years there may not be any repair men left.

117475 2003-02-01 03:00:00 Service people really should tell their customers the truth when things are taken in for repairs . If it's going to take weeks to get parts the customer has a right to know and they'll be far more sympathetic towards the service shop if they know the deal .

A few years ago the monitor on my first PC packed up (for the second time) and I sent it back to PC Direct in Auckland, where it came from . They were really good, told me that it was just a blown fuse or something very simple and I would have it back again within a day or two, just like the previous time . Wonderful .

I waited . And waited . And waited .

Over a week later a phone call to them had them claiming that it had already been sent back the previous week . Waited another week then wrote to them with my complaint . They had no answer as to its whereabouts so I wrote again and told them I was going to buy another monitor and they would have to reimburse me for it .

That I did (and upgraded to a 15" while I was at it :D) and they coughed up for it . Ha, about a month later my original monitor turned up at the door!! Goodness knows where it had been but there were a couple of strange addresses underneath my one so it looked like it had had a nice tour around the country! :D

I didn't need it then so PC Direct sent a courier around to pick it up and that was the end of that . Apart from the severe withdrawal symtoms I can't complain about how they handled the whole matter -- they always did look after me when I needed them .
