117369 2003-01-30 20:38:00 Purchased a Tyan Slot A AMDK7 S2380 motherboard and an AMD Athlon Slot A 750MHz CPU from trademe. It does not go.

No noise, no HDD activity, no fans going, no video and no smell :-), just nothing at all.

What have I done?

Checked and rechecked the jumpers (7 of them), the board arrived correctly configured anyway.

Switched power supplies, though both proved good in another computer.

Replaced the CMOS RTC backuo battery.

Tried several sticks of SDRAM, all of which had been proved good.

Through its jumper, reset the CMOS to its default settings, though don't know if that worked on a seemingly dead M/B

To provide a good load for te power supply, I attached a total of 4 fans, plus the HDD. Did not bother attaching the floppy drive.

Only card inserted is a PCI video.

CPU seems to be firmly inserted into the Slot A

Questions - With the load on the power supply, is there any way to test if the M/B is actually receiving and distributing power. I can only assume that the 'power good' signal is working.

As there are three fan headers on the M/B, even though the rest of the system may not be working, should they at least be going?

But most of all - what have I overlooked and what else can I try?

117370 2003-01-30 21:02:00 Try ONLY plugging in the cable that goes from the power to your mobo, and try it in all the places possible, as when I built my PC, I found that for some reason I'd been plugging the Reset into the Power and vice versa, which gave the same results :-) Chilling_Silence (9)
117371 2003-01-30 21:32:00 I'd be very careful with that approach Chill.

Power in the wrong place is a recipe for smoke, followed by haemorrhaging $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and strong words, spoken with feeling.

My advice is to RTFM first, either hard copy or on the net to make sure you have the right connections.

Cheers

Oh, Yes, Always! I RTFM about 5-6 times though . . Still cant figure out whether it was me doing something or the labels wrong, but I dont really care . . Im just thinking that if, like me, the Reset button is plugged into the power, it cant be doing much good to it anyways :D

RTFM is good advice :)

117376 2003-01-30 23:17:00 Hi Chill, I might be missunderstanding. I have a 20 pin power plug comes out of the power supply, the motherboard has a corresponding 20 pin female socket, there is no other place to plug the power into !! Curly (487)
117377 2003-01-30 23:32:00 Further to my first post - Curly

I have a keyboard, mouse and monitor attached.

I do not have either the HDD LED nor the power LED presently attached as as far as I know, it will not make an difference. But maybe I'm wrong !

Again unless I am wrong. the reset button on the computer case is of a make once type, that is you push it in, it completes the circuit then springs back out. Whereas the power switch, once pressed completes the circuit and stays in. Hope you can understand that :-)

At present the whole deal is laid out on a very large sheet of plastic, except for the monitor, keyboard and mouse. This way it is easier to look it over and make changes- I call it breadboarding but I'm sure there are other terms also.

Keep those suggestions rolling in as the motherboard/CPU combo is not heavy enough for an anchor :-)

Talk about read the manual, for two nights in a row I have taken it to bed to read and re-read. Wife is not that enthralled, can't understand why!! Must be one of those women things :-)
