118044 2003-02-04 00:49:00 Until recently, while viewing a website I was able to click on a "contact us" button or on an email address given in the website and Outlook Express would automatically open a new mail window with the email address in the "To" space. Now when I try and do this I get an error message - Error loading url.dll. The system cannot find the file specified. - I wonder if I have accidentally deleted a vital file when clearing out temp Internet files, etc. Can somebody confirm that this might be what has happened, and if so what file(s) I might have deleted? Select "Folder Options" from the View menu
Select the File Types tab
Select "URL:MailTo Protocol" and click Advanced
Delete all listings under "Actions"
Click "New"
Put "open" in the Action field, and then browse to the file "Outlook.exe" or Outlook Express executable file (msimn.exe I think).

Outlook Express now opens when I click on the "Contact us" button on a website, but it doesn't open a new mail window with the email address in place. Perhaps there's another .exe file that would do that? Colin H (3085)

"C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"

Is yours simply the first part, or does it have the junk on the end (-c IPM.Note /m "%1)? Perhaps thats the thing there?

Otherwise, have a look at your IE settings (Tools > Internet Options > Programs) and see if Outlook Express is now set as the default Mailto program. If not, change it to that and see if it works.

In my Open action box I have

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

for the Application used to perform action and the "Use DDE" box is checked. Underneath that there is msimn in the Application box and System in the Topic box.

(I have Windows 98 and Outlook Express 6)

I have tried adding the extra bits you each have after msimn.exe, and in all cases I get a message telling me the computer can't find the file specified and that I should check the path is correct. So I guess that's not the problem. I have also tried ticking the "Use DDE" box and adding msimn in the Application box and System in the Topic box, but these settings are not retained, ie when I check back after trying it out the "Use DDE" box has become unticked.

I have also looked at a pal's computer to check on his settings, and they are the same as mine except that the "Enable Quick View" box is ticked - in my case that box is grey and so I can't tick it. Don't know if that's relevant. There is no extra bit after msimn.exe on his computer, and the correct New Message window opens when I click on a Contact Us button on a web page using his computer.

Any further thoughts would be welcome, but if not, thanks anyway!

It would appear to me that this is where the problem may lie. I don't know how it would have disappeared, if indeed it has - do a search on your hard drive for url.dll, ensuring that all files are set to be displayed in Windows Explorer.

All I can suggest is to try a repair of Internet Explorer from Control Panel's Add/Remove Hardware (click on IE, choose Add/Remove then choose the option to repair).

If that doesn't work you may have to try replacing the url.dll so post back with your results after trying the repair.
