117772 2003-02-02 18:57:00 Long time no see everybody...

My computer's not working :( As soon as I turn it on I get a series of beeps, and so I want to know what the beeps mean. I get:

Beep x2 (in quick succession)
Pause
Beep x8
Pause
Beep x2
Pause
Beep x1.

Or...

Bu-Beep.... Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep... beep beep... beep.

Any ideas? I'm suffering withdrawals!!!

Mike.

PS The word beep looks really funny after you type it so many times :p

117773 2003-02-02 20:12:00 Hi Mike.

those continous beeps, im pretty sure you have a serious problem with either your motherboard or your power supply.

have you tinkered with anyhting inside your computer latley for it to do this?

117774 2003-02-02 20:18:00 Just thought I'd clarify - beeps don't continue after that sequence... they just stop.

Anyway - I haven't really tinkered inside for a while. Plugged in another HDD for a little while (slave channel) then my spare one again... but this was a while before this happened - I had it on, going fine, then I went out for an hour and came back and it has only worked once since (about 6 or 7 hours later after many many attempts at getting it to work again).

I have a feeling it could be the CPU, but am also wondering whether it might be a video card problem that's causing issues?

Anybody know what that sequence of beeps means?

Mike.

117775 2003-02-02 21:17:00 Oh, 3dits 4 dits 2 dits & a Dash, I think someone’s “borrowed” the RAM, the CPU & the Video Card! ;/

What make of BIOS is it? The beeps mean something different depending on the manufacturer. ;)

I think it's AMI... but I'm not entirely sure. The PC is a Gateway, so if anybody knows what BIOS Gateway uses... :) Pretty sure it's AMI though - but a limited version (can't do hardly anything in it), if that's going to make a difference. I can double check and see if the BIOS manu is printed on the m/board somewhere when I get home tonight... but then I won't be able to report back here again until tomorrow, as this is the internet PC that's down :(

117780 2003-02-02 22:30:00 So by the sounds of things I'm guessing I've stuffed my video card :(

But then there are extra beeps... I really need to find out the make of BIOS.

I guessed it might be the video card as I'd been trying to use the TV out function of it not long before this all happened, and I kept being told there was no TV chip on the card (even though there is, and I'd been using that feature just the day before). I think I may have fried the TV out chip :)

I'll see if I can find a spare video card and swap them over and see if that makes a difference - will report back tomorrow.
