117732 2003-02-02 04:11:00 When I run top on a linux box, it says this:

5:09pm up 2 days, 1:21, 1 user,
load average: 0.27, 0.30, 0.28
133 processes: 130 sleeping, 3 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 0.5% user, 5.9% system, 0.0% nice, 93.4% idle
Mem: 772704K av, 723996K used, 48708K free, 0K shrd, 112128K buff
Swap: 1535976K av, 0K used, 1535976K free 510484K cached

can anybody explain what it all means?

117733 2003-02-02 04:53:00 The top man page ("man top") has a fairly good description under "FIELD DESCRIPTIONS".

The first line is the uptime and the second is processes.

I find it fairly self-explanatory. What don't you understand about it?

117735 2003-02-02 09:46:00 Well this is from what I can pick up from it*.

Uptime, it has been up for 2days and 1hr 21m, with 1 user that time.

ummmmm

> 133 processes: 130 sleeping, 3 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
rather explanatry i think. 133 started, 130 sleeping, 3 running

> CPU states: 0.5% user, 5.9% system, 0.0% nice, 93.4% idle
5.9% CPU utilisation,

> Mem: 772704K av, 723996K used, 48708K free, 0K shrd, 112128K buff
77meg average memory usage.

swap file stats. zero used.

117736 2003-02-02 12:13:00 Load average is the average number of processes waiting for the processor over the last 1 minute, 15 minutes, and an hour (IIRC).

Its used as measure of how busy a system is.

117737 2003-02-02 18:11:00 What about this, this is what I dont get:
> 133 processes: 130 sleeping, 3 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped

My computer is a Zombie???
Chilling_Silence (9)
117738 2003-02-02 21:38:00 ummm at a guess that will be 133 processes have been initialised .

3 are running (active, working)
130 are in an idle state
0 have been stopped
0 have been a sleep for a very long time, or maybe they're asleep because something else went a sleep .

I didnt get much sleep last night.. I feel like one of those system processes wanting sleep ;-)

117740 2003-02-03 00:07:00 A zombie is a process that has finished running but is still waiting for its parent process to exit it properly. They usually appear if there is a bug in the parent programme causing it to lose track of its children. bmason (508)

Who dreamed up all this terminology, geeky children or geeky parents? The mind boggles! :D
