118178 2003-02-04 03:46:00 I believe my computer may have suffered from a lighting strike; to confirm this what are some of the typical component failures?

So far, I have resolved that my power pack is blown and that there is data lose on the hard drive. What else should I check for? 		johnno (3083)
118179 2003-02-04 04:02:00 Funny stuff, lightning, we had a strike once through the toilet window which punched a hole in a tin of Harpic :).
If there is a strike on the phone lines, or an induced high vlotage on them, then the entry path to your computer will be through the (internal) modem. If the computer is running then the high voltage can run through the motherboard and destroy the cpu and other stuff. That's what happened to mine. If the computer is off, then the damage may be limited to just the modem, which was all that happened on my backup computer.

I suppose if the lightning induces a big pulse on the power lines then the psu may well blow up. In that case the damage may only be the psu and the rest of the computer may (fingers crossed ) be ok. If that happened though, you'd expect other appliances to have blown out too. 		Terry Porritt (14)

A surge could have blown the fuse in the PSU (like it did to my PC once). Although you could be able to replace the fuse yourself, it's a lot more safer to go to a PC repair shop and get the fuse replaced (if the fuse did blow) 		utopia (2200)
118181 2003-02-04 07:07:00 I had a lightening strike blow out my modem, which was replaced, only to find some months later, my just purchased scanner would not work, due to a port being burnt out.

Also I have heard that once your M/B has been hit(but still working) it will "AGE" it causing problems with circuit connections, thus all sorts of unidentifiable problems as the board breaks down. Also known as "half cooked" ?? 		Rod ger (316)
