118054 2003-02-04 01:06:00 If I format a new 80GB hard drive as FAT32 in my WinXP machine, can I then simply install it in someone else's Win98 machine after first setting that drive in his machine to Auto and LBA?. DonaldJ (3086)
118055 2003-02-04 01:17:00 Of course. It might not work, though. :D

I'd be inclined to format a disk on the machine it will be used on. This might have been sorted out in the new BIOSs, but one problem as disks became much bigger than the IBM "standard" contemplated has been that different BIOSs used different numbers of "pseudo heads, sectors, cylinders" to make up the actual capacity of the disk. The LBA system might avoid it, but ... it depends on how it has been implemented.

Try it. If it works, fine. But at the worst you will have to format it on the other machine; you won't actually harm anything.
