118479 2003-02-05 18:56:00 Next thing is to apply the MS Win98 SEshutdown patch from:
here (www.microsoft.com).

This patch removes the disable fast shutdown option in msconfig.

If you have Win98 Ist edition try checking the Disable Fast Shut down box in msconfig-Advanced, if it's there, cant remember if it is.

Also in msconfig (System Configuration Utility), if there is Microsoft Find Fast under the Start Up tab then disable it.

Hopefully the shutdown patch will cure the problem, but there are other causes of rebooting too.

118480 2003-02-05 22:23:00 Terry, I had disabled fast shutdown in msconfig.exe/advanced a couple of days ago as I seemed to have remembered it could cause shutdown problems. Didn't make a difference through. :-(

I then downloaded the patch you identified , but on installation, Win98 1st Ed told me 'Forget it- this is a second edition patch', or words to that effect :-(

Never mind, if I can get a bit of spare time this arvo will have a look around Google. And I always thought winSE just had a few extra toys and that the basic core was the same as win98, but not quite so.

Appreciate the help Terry.
