118222 2003-02-04 03:56:00 We recently acquired an older pc, in as is condition - (which was working when i unplugged it). It is a real oldie, but I know it well ;-). Anyway as i said, when i unplugged it to bring it home it was working fine. Now that i have set it up again i am having problems downloading pages- I can connect to the internet (after a couple of tries, however it used to connect first try), but the downloading speeds seem to be the main problem, it just isn't doing its thing as it used to. It starts, but its just taking forever and that's if it does it successfully(downloads the page). I have checked as much as i can think of, as in, phone lines, phone cords, and that kind of thing, but i am not really up with the play on Modem settings etc... and figured i shouldn't have to change any as they should still be intact in theory??

Has anybody got any ideas on this? The Modem is about 10months old and an external modem:
Dynalink - Details from Device Manager are: Conexant HCF PCI Modem

The computer itself is running as well as it always has, so it seems to be Modem related i think?
The computer specs are:
Compaq Deskpro, 8 GB hdd, 32mb ram pentium{r}, win. 95.

Any help or ideas appreciated, or does this sound like the Modem is on its way out? But surely it wouldn't even dial-up if that was the case?

One other thing i was also wondering about is if the power cord being a bit old could cause this kind of thing? Not likely is it?

118223 2003-02-04 04:02:00 The phoneline might not be as good as the one it came from. (Or not "liked as much" by the modem. ;-)) If it's retrying too many packets, that can cause a huge speed cut. Perhaps it's just the "one device too many" on that line? Graham L (2)

That describes an internal "winmodem", not an external (unless its USB, which could be dodgy on Win 95 anyway)

I wonder if you have the right driver loaded?

118225 2003-02-04 04:10:00 If its a Connexant USB winmodem, you will need atleast a PIII-500 to run it properly. bmason (508)
118226 2003-02-04 04:22:00 Which version of Win 95? Only 95C is USB-compatible? But if it was going OK before that shouldn't be the problem. Was anything changed. Robin S_ (86)
118227 2003-02-04 04:32:00 OK...

You say the modem is External. If that is the case it won't be a PCI as described.

I recently came across a computer with an Internal modem AND an External connected. The Internal was a 56K and the External was a 28.8.
Needless to say I disconnected the External and used the Internal due to the speed of the Modems.

Anyway... Almost certainly you have the wrong drivers installed for the modem. Have you one Internal and one External by any chance? I guess that you have the phone line plugged into the external but what is the ISP connection using?

118228 2003-02-04 07:37:00 ?:| ?:| - Murphys Law, I jumped on this (the computer with the modem probs) after reading your replies, so I could check these modem specs again and post back - ?:| - It dialed up first try and loaded the page perfectly normally :^O, This is extrememly strange, I have spent the last couple of nights trying to work out whats going on with it, and the minute i stop trying it works??? I can only hope it will last, but I haven't got high expectations on that happening.
Funny thing is i had been trying with only this modem in the phone line thinking it would be better, but the other computer is still in the double phone jack point now and its o.k/connected and working?? Surely the modem has to be faulty?

Thankyou for all the prompt replies, thats great!

Now this is definately an external modem I am using and connecting with and always have done - It is sitting in front of me and i hear it dialing and see the lights working. It is not usb. So I presume the wrong drivers are loaded for it to be showing as those specs in device manager, and also under the details (when i am connected from the sys tray icon), but it has always worked well with these drivers and as i said i have changed nothing. When i say Dynalink, that is the brand on it.

Well I don't really know where to go from here, it will either keep working or i will disconnect and it will be back to probs again - and i still don't know what is causing it???

One thing i did notice that is different this time is the connection speed is lower this time than it was all the times it wasn't working??? I presume that is because the other computer is still in the double jackpoint too, but it seems backward to me that it is working at a slower con. speed and with another phone in the jackpoint???

Do these latest happening enlighten anybody as to what they think is going on?? Does the fact it has connected mean that the modem is faulty?? As if it was drivers etc... it wouldn't have connected.

Thankyou all and i will post back and let you know what happens when i try connecting again - "she says with baited breath".

118229 2003-02-04 08:49:00 If it is a serial modem, try using the generic external modem drivers that come with windows, or download the driver from the website.

I must be terribly confused as it is. A hardware modem (serial external) carries out all the functions on the modem hardware, while a PCI driver does it in the PC software.

118230 2003-02-04 08:53:00 The conexant driver is certainly not correct for a Dynalink modem although it is obviously working.
Check if you have a Dynalink you can select in you Dialup networking.
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the ISP connection icon and choose Properties.
At the bottom where it say"connect using" click on the arrow on the box ans see if there is another modem to select.
