118584 2003-02-05 06:05:00 Hi,I am wondering if anybody out there can tell me where to get or if I can obtain a video driver for a 256 color display game it's an old game kingsquestvi but this new comp doesn't come with that driver I am wondering if there is a downloadable one.I am using a hewlett packard 510 a comp: I am not a computer literate person I know the basic's so any help anybody could supply me would be great and I appreciate all the help I can get with this problem.H/P said I could find one on the net but they also didn't say where and then they said they don't recommend if for the H/P comps? So I am now thoroughly confused.
I trust PC world's advise better than I do H/P's.

Thanks again for any help you may be able to give:-))

118585 2003-02-05 06:13:00 I've played KQVI on WinXP Pro so it's possible to play.

Any chance of getting your Operating System? (Windows 9x, ME, 2K, XP?)

In XP you can create a shortcut on your desktop, right click on it, properties, compatibility and you can check it so it can run in 256 Colours.

118587 2003-02-05 07:28:00 Idiot proof instructions on there way :)

go to start; All Programs; Accessories; then choose Program compatibility Wizard;

Click Next

make sure there is a green dot next to the item that says 'I want to choose from a list of programs

Click Next

After a moment or so a list of all the programs that are on your computer will show. Scroll down the list until you find program you are looking for

Click next

You said the game was old so click the dot next to Microsoft Windows 95

then click next

then click the box next to 256 Colors and also next to Disable Visual Themes

if the game is meant to run on a screen to the size of 640 by 480 (if the game is quite old it probably will) click the box next to that item as well

Click next

Click next again

The program will then run. if the program runs fine then click next,
Then click next to No and click next

You have just completed.

if the game doesn't work probably then you may need to change some of the other settings. if you can't get it to work let us know.

118590 2003-02-05 11:40:00 Hello orca .

From my experience that old games usually having trouble running in Win XP even after NathanThekind's advice . In fact that 90% of the old game (dos) that I've tried on my pc doesnt seem to work .

Since you said its a old game . I assume its a dos game . If you have a windows boot disk, use that to boot it up to dos and start it from there . Thats how I play my old games except that I cant always get the sound going .

If u dont know how to create a boot disc, right click on A drive, goto format and tick create an MS-DOS startup disc .

118591 2003-02-05 20:25:00 Hi again.

So you have a DOS game. these are harder to get working but it can be done for some. first of all an error message is probably coming up in the black screen (also called the command prompt).

What you need to do open the command prompt. do this by going to start; All Programs; Accessories; then click on Command Prompt

Now I am hoping the that you know a little bit about DOS as you need to know DOS commands to load the program.

First off you might as well full screen the command prompt window. this is the middle button of the three in the top right corner

first you need to get to the directory where the game is

it is likely what you see on screen will be something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName>

I am guessing that your game is stored in a folder in the C drive. so first you need to change to the C drive

Type the following

CD ../..

You should now be at C:\>

Now you need to know the name of the folder that your game is in if you don't know how to check this let me know . otherwise type this

CD FolderName

once you are here you need to load the program, do this by typing in the name of the file for the game. once again if you don't know how to find this out let me know

it should look something like this on screen once you have type it
C:\FolderName>FileName.exe

once you have done this write down the error message and then let me know what it says

:)
