You are correct in that your IP could be traced to Ihug who have your details and technically, yes, they could be passed on to the third party -- but believe me, there is NO way without a court order that they'll release them. That outfit is just trying it on! If you care to give us the bulletin board's url etc I'll go tell em what a bunch of *insert foul word here* they are. |

| 118681 | 2003-02-06 02:17:00 | It's always a good idea to know your rights. If IHUG cause trouble (ie billing you) although I doubt they will, there's plenty more ISP's. Depends on you contract/agreement of course, but you might check out the Consumer Guarantees Act which covers the right to charge you: Part of this reads: Consumer Guarantees Act 1973 IV: Supply of Services 31 Guarantee as to price 31. Guarantee as to price---(1) Subject to section 41 of this Act, where services are supplied to a consumer there is a guarantee that the consumer is not liable to pay to the supplier more than a reasonable price for the service in any case where the price for the service is not--- (a) Determined by the contract; nor (b) Left to be determined in a manner agreed by the contract; nor (c) Left to be determined by the course of dealing between the parties. (2) Where there is a failure to comply with the guarantee in this section, the consumer's right of redress is to refuse to pay more than a reasonable price. (3) Nothing in this Part of this Act confers any other right of redress. etc. and you can follow this through further if you like. |

Everyone wants to know, and quite frankly this seems to be slightly dodgy in that you have so far avoided the inclusion of an hyperlink. However, you have asked for everyones help in dealing with a problem, and only given half the information. We don't know the plot behind this game. I don't think anyone would actually like to be an accomplice in any crime, let alone yours. But accidents do happen. We are of course only human. - humans using critically enhanced technology:p radz:p |

| 118685 | 2003-02-07 09:09:00 | This is probably OT a bit, but what about p2p users. Can they be traced the same way by using their IP address. I ask, because if it is possible, would it be possible for say, the music industry for one (and I don't want to start a another debate) to use the information to see who's infringing copyright laws etc. Unlikely that they would but is it possible. Sorry if this turns out to be a silly question but I was just wondering. Cheers Craig |

| 118686 | 2003-02-07 09:17:00 | It is my understanding that Sony for one was using software and was tracing p2p downloaders and uploaders and what songs were being traded at one time though what the end result of that was to be I don't know. | Gordon. (2217) | ||
| 118687 | 2003-02-07 11:19:00 | Can you "sue" people like that for un-necessary stress? pity if it could not be done. I would like to see someone say when they hear the words "smile you are on candid camera" after a stressed out time say "The jokes on you mate, wait until you get a letter from my lawyer" |
