2003-02-07 05:20:00 | Has anyone got a Palm M100/M105 to talk to the Pilot/Handspring Tool that comes with RedHat 8 (I belive it ships with other linux distros as well), and if so what did you do? Cheers Liam (on the Linux box :D)

2003-02-07 07:40:00 | I got mine working under mandrake 8 a while ago, but I stopped using it after 3 weeks so I haven't set it up with anything more recent. The only problem I had was giving my user permission to read&write to the serial port which can be fixed by loggin in as root and either using your file manager or running "chmod a+rw /dev/ttyS0". Also I think the default for most apps was to try to use /dev/pilot which won't exist. You can either create it by logging in as root and runing "ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/pilot". Or set the programe to use the serial port directly.

2003-02-07 23:14:00 | Excellent. I just remembered, if you don't like the native apps I found the windows software ran perfectly under wine. | bmason (508) | |

2003-02-07 23:32:00 | Um, well it doesn't run in wine for me, I launched /mnt/cdrom/english/palmsfw/disk1/setup.exe, and setup got to here (sal.neoburn.net), and then this (sal.neoburn.net) appeared, and of course when you click ok it all closes, funny, I get the exact same problem when I try to install MYOB First Accounts 3.1. Then again, It probably help to try the latest palm software (V 4, I think), as I only have 3.5 sitting here, will download that later and give it a go. Cheers Liam

2003-02-08 21:50:00 | When I last tried it I had already installed it thru windows. I've been looking for an excuse to try out installing windows apps in linux, so I grabbed the latest version of wine from http://www.codeweavers.com and my palm CD (3.1.1) and installed it without too much trouble. You will need to run "winesetup" before you try to run any windows apps (if you don't have it get the codeweavers version). The installer used by palm needs special settings which winesetup creates automagically. I was quite impressed how smooth the install was going so I started taking screenshots (homepages.paradise.net.nz). A couple of tips specific to the install: - Be patient if it looks like nothings happening. - When you get to snapshot4, minimise so you can see the registration window. - Hit cancel at the registration thing or you will get snapshot5 unless you fill everything in. - Skip the intro, because it takes ages to get anywhere and its full screen so its hard to get out of it. Unfortunately I couldn't test if the software can actually talk to my palm because I couldn't find any AAA batteries, but I assume it would be the same as last time.

2003-02-13 11:36:00 | Actually the problem with Wine was that I didn't have write permision for /usr/share/wine-c directory, whic is a Wine's virtual MSDOS C drive, so whenever the installer tried to write there it couldne and crashed, so I did a 'Ctrl+T' then a 'su' then a 'chmod -R 777 /usr/share/wine-c' (see I am learning Linux), once that was done the install went flawlessly. The problem I have now is I can sync it, in the Hotsync proggy in the system tray, I click setup, then select the Local tab, however in the Serial port box there are no serial ports listed?!?! So I can hotsync the plam, how do I fix this? Cheers Liam

2003-02-13 13:25:00 | Ah yes, just realised I forgot to do the "Ctrl+T, su, chmod a+rw /dev/ttyS0, -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/pilot" procedure, all working now. Cheers Liam
