118800 2003-02-06 05:26:00 1. Have rather small MS Word template to use for header sheet - around 100k or so.

2. Insert a small logo...also around 100k.

3. Now file size has ballooned to over 1.5meg!

Does anyone know why this would be? I've never had it before. Tried it on Word 97 and 2000 and the result was the same.

I read somewhere about turning off the "save preview", but that made no difference. As usual the MS site offers no help...

Anyone heard of this before? And more importantly, know how to fix it?

Cheers
Mike

118801 2003-02-06 09:31:00 Its a known problem. The files bloat when graphics are added.

From memory, make sure that you have all service packs installed for Word.
Then, its a matter of ensuring the graphics you are inserting are in the right format, and all is well. Look on the MS knowledgebase for more detailed info.

Also try saving as...another filename and see if the filesize shrinks again. Sometimes the file grows with every save.

118803 2003-02-06 09:55:00 Ever looked at a Word file in a text editor such as Norton Commander? You'll find there is a tremendous amount of redundancy (ie repetition). For instance, your text (or part of it, at least) is often (? always) present in triplicate.

Ever heard of the term 'bloatware', often applied to M$ products?

118804 2003-02-06 11:40:00 Open/Staroffice can reduce the wasted space in word files if you import and then export them but they can have trouble with complicated documents.

The good news is that all the wasted space in the word docs compresses really easilly, so if you have to transmit them zipping them first will reduce the size quite a lot.

118805 2003-02-06 12:06:00 What you need to do is not allow Quick Saves which gives you such bloated files. mikebartnz (21)
118806 2003-02-06 18:38:00 If you link the image to the doc, rather than inserting it, the doc size won't blow out. wuppo (41)
118807 2003-02-08 21:45:00 Thanks to all for your ideas. I tried various things and nothing seems to cut down the file size.

I can link to the logo file, but sometimes the file needs to be sent to someone who doesn't have the logo, so that won't work.

Time for Acrobat to earn it's keep, methinks!
