118769 2003-02-06 02:25:00 Hello,

Does any one know of any "Free" easy to set-up and use web server software????
For a WIN ME or XP/pro computer.

I don’t know much about Apache it is too confusing for me including IIS.

I just want to set-up a simple web server which servers up some WebPages & Which I can have a play around with etc...

Also I all ready set-up some dynamic DNS accounts.

Note: the computer that will have the web server on, it will be on a network (LAN) to get to the Internet. Will that be a problem???
Also I am on a ADSL internet connection.

118771 2003-02-06 02:40:00 1) There is a link here (www.ritlabs.com) for a small web server. Never tried it though.

2) Running a web server can definitely pose problems for network security and should be run on a different network segment. A product like Smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org) offers a good firewall solution, but requires a dedicated PC.

3) If you have an xtra account I think you will find that the terms of your agreement stipulate No Servers.

118773 2003-02-06 02:49:00 Savant (http://savant.sourceforge.net/) is another simple Web server.
Is your ADSL connection through a router or direct to a PC that then provides ICS to the networked PCs?

If you are using a router, you need to pinhole port access to the PC the server is running on (set a fixed IP for that PC).

118775 2003-02-06 03:42:00 I thought IIS came free with XP Pro. It is not that difficult to setup. However, Apache is a better server technology, and is free. Took a friend about 15mins to get Apache setup on his FTP server (running winNT).

What is the LAN setup?:| - star, ring, bus. Any routers/bridges/gateways?:| Which component in the network is connected to the Internet.

Xtra don't allow you to run a server on their "residential" type accounts. But with a business plan, they LOVE you to... it's more income for them, natuurlijk :)
