119166 2003-02-07 09:57:00 For some strange reason RH8 doesn't link my soundcard (mainboard built in), every time I login I get this (sal.neoburn.net) error and when I go into "Hat>System Settings>Soundcard Detection (sal.neoburn.net)" and click play sound, nothing happens, however when I use say the Knoppix CD the sound works fine.

I suspect my PC may lost the symbolic link to the soundcard /dev/dsp, how do I find a actual address of the soundcard and fix this?

Cheers

Liam

119167 2003-02-07 11:40:00 Type cat /proc/modules | grep soundcore and it should tell you if anything is there. If not run
/usr/sbin/sndconfig which is the configuration utility.

119168 2003-02-07 11:52:00 Here's what happened when I ran /usr/sbin/sndconfig 1 (sal.neoburn.net) 2 (sal.neoburn.net) 3 (sal.neoburn.net) any ideas? nz_liam (845)
119169 2003-02-08 02:35:00 Anyone have any ideas where I should go from here? nz_liam (845)
119170 2003-02-08 02:40:00 ... the sound HOWTO. Look especially at the als stuff. There is something I (vaguely) remember about having to start the sound server for sound to work in the GUIs. Graham L (2)

Were you running "sndconfig" as root? Afaik, you can't insmod/modprobe as a normal user.

119172 2003-02-08 05:01:00 Good point, I'll just login as root (before I was just su'ing the command prompt). nz_liam (845)
119173 2003-02-08 05:06:00 Just tried logging in as root, and got the same error.

Any ideas?

119174 2003-02-09 05:42:00 Ok, well I have made a semi-breakthrough (or rather got som more errors for you guys :D) .

Aparetnly the ALSA driver workds with my sound chpset, so I went along to . alsa-project . org and downloaded alsa-driver-0 . 5 . 12a (ftp://ftp . alsa-project . org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-0 . 5 . 12a . tar . bz2" target="_blank">www . alsa-project . org and downloaded alsa-driver-0 . 5 . 12a (ftp:), however I have run into problems installing it . First I loged in as root I ran ' . /configure' from the command prompt, which seemed to go ok .

However I ran into trouble with the next step; I then typed in 'make install', which produced a lovley error ( . neoburn . net/pf1images/nz_liam-make_install . png" target="_blank">sal . neoburn . net), where do I go from here?

It looks like I have to alter one of the configuration scripts so the line "sound . c | /sbin/genksyms -k 0 . 0 . 0 > . . /include/modules/sound . ver" reads "sound . c | /sbin/genksyms -k 2 . 4 . 18-24 . 8 . 0 > . . /include/modules/sound . ver" , which reflects my currnet kernel .

Im going to have a look round the files to see if there is anywhere to change the "sound . c | /sbin/genksyms -k 0 . 0 . 0 > . . /include/modules/sound . ver" line, however any help from you guys would also be verry appreciated .

Cheers

119175 2003-02-09 06:28:00 Hey, I think I've got it, found a file called Makefile.conf which contains

Looks like I just have to change the "GENKSYMS=/sbin/genksyms -k 0.0.0" line :)
