1329666 2013-02-23 23:27:00 I have a sad tower, and everytime i get geared up to replace it something happens in my life and that stalls it, and we really need to replace it, upgrade it etc.

but before i can do that i need to price and check options.
i would like something else net capable............as one puter between three people is a nightmare especially since peach is slow and glitchy, and reboots needed regularly.

so questions are what do you have and use regularly that are net capable.

should i just go buy a lap top, notebook, tablet etc to keep us going and upgrade as time lets me?

and then i dont know what to get? suggestions. and i dont know pricing. doesnt need to be over the top. wireless capable is good atm, we just got to up the strength of the signal...lolol

1329667 2013-02-23 23:41:00 We use a net PC here, it's 6yrs old. Works fine :)
Windows XP though with just 1GB of RAM.

1329668 2013-02-24 00:22:00 Think about what it will be used for, where you are likely to use it and who will use it, and that might help. i donated an old desktop to a friend so she can have it in the lounge and monitor what her boys do online and she has a laptop so she can take it to her room or sit in the lounge gary67 (56)

1329670 2013-02-24 03:37:00 Tablets are great for casual browsing, reading e-mail, and using You tube, generally a great data consumption device/toy. But they are not as convenient for typing or particularly good at serious work applications. Worth considering, if the 7" form factor is not too small for you there are a couple of good options, the warehouse has (had?) an acer 7" tablet for $250 which is the best cheap one around and I've seen the 7" galaxy tab 2 for $300 recently. A bit more expensive but probably the best option is the nexus 7 which is still reasonable. For 10" I'd say get a dual core or quad core name brand with a screen you like as cheap as you can with android 4.0 or newer and don't worry too much about specs.

Otherwise a cheap laptop or lower specced tower is a good option for a 2nd machine - and you could even go the linux route if you are feeling adventurous and want to save a bit of cash. I recently was given an old SFF Dell core 2 duo machine and I am very pleased with the performance all round, more than fast enough for everythng short of gaming.

1329671 2013-02-24 07:56:00 What dugimodo said, check out the Nexus 7, see if that'll fulfill your requirements. They're cheap, portable, great to leave around the living room, and support multiple users too! :) Chilling_Silence (9)

Beetle can always consider purchasing a second-hand bluetooth-enabled keyboard to overcome this barrier.

A bit like the Surface setup.

1329673 2013-02-25 00:25:00 That's true. Myself I have a transformer with a keyboard dock but at close to $900 I didn't think I'd recommend that one. Great toy though.

The main thing I was attempting to convey was they are not PC replacements and are more suited to certain types of applications. For the price of a high end tablet you could get a decent laptop or desktop which is much better at productivity, just not as portable or good on battery life.

1329674 2013-03-29 21:39:00 Ok............ well im still here, the best procrastinator there is.............

i was unable to complete this idea, a few other life things got in the way.

change of plan, id like a laptop reccomendation please........... brands, asus, acer or toshiba, around the $800 - 1000 mark of possible......... nice big screen...... mostly for me, and then we can update the tower, and the kids can keep that one :p
