| 1303033 | 2012-09-24 05:01:00 | Interesting article in todays Dom Post showing how the National Standards results vary between upper and lower decile schools. www.stuff.co.nz No surprises really, one could just as easily conclude (but not allowed to say so..) that the dumbest people have the dumbest children and belong to the poorer classes, whereas wealthier people have greater nous and correspondingly brighter children.......(on the average that is, considering I came from a poor working class family showing exceptions prove the rule ) "This highlights the fact that if we want to improve and lift achievement and learning in our schools across all things, then we have to make a really genuine effort to improve equity," Mr Drummond said. "Maybe this will be the catalyst for a stronger Government response around those equity issues. It has been worthwhile in confirming those correlations, but we knew that before national standards." ..... says Mr Drummond, Principals Federation president....maybe he should learn the difference between equity and equality. Anyway having thrown down a bone, let the dogs from right and left loose to fight over it  |

Sadly, there seems to be a bit of a trend to allocate equity somewhat unevenly between teachers and students, the students being the armed wing of the Ministry. |

The one who shares reading a book each night with a parent, or the kid threatened with bodily injury if they don't go to sleep? I've seen way too many parents of low decile kids who do all their parenting sitting on their fat backsides yelling orders and threats at their kids. "Come here / Sit down or I'll kill you" being a typical example of the crass parenting I hear from some of the locals. |

Money does not equate to smarts. Poor kids may do badly but that can be due to the lack of after school activities, the lack of lunch, and lack of motivation - not being encouraged. My son went to a school not known for smart kids, he was very smart......despite the schools obsessive focus on sports only. What the kid then does with that smartness is up to them.... |

| 1303041 | 2012-09-24 23:30:00 | Pctek seems sure there is no correlation between low socioeconomic status and academic abilty, others seem convinced poor achievement in the 3 Rs is due to lack of food. Interestingly then, we UK wartime children should have been the dumbest generation as our wartime food ration allowances were pretty meagre to say the least, and our staple diet seemed to consist of bread and dripping, or toast and dripping. That was what most children took to school if they were not having school dinners. We did have orange juice and cod liver oil supplements as well as a daily 1/3 pint of milk at school. We were actually rated as being the healthiest generation. |
