1303682 2012-09-29 07:33:00 The one on the left is a Westland Whirlwind I am pretty sure. Would the one on the right be the Bristol Beaufighter? Nick G (16709)
1303683 2012-09-29 07:47:00 Fantastic day, Mossie beating up the field at 'omigod' altitude, three full-on demos during the day, ably supported by Spitfire, Mustang, Vampire, P40 plus several other jets and a wide range of other vintage aircraft . It was gob-smackingly good and I hope they put out a DVD of the performance .

I took a lot of photos with Mrs T's 'Snap it Harry' Canon A1200 and got some amazing 'prop-stopped' shots despite the low height and speed . I had to pan the camera very fast and had no idea what I was catching till I got home and took a look . They may not stand up to much enlargement but the 'stopped action' exceeded all my expectations .

It was a privilege to see the sole flying Mosquito take to the air in NZ, and it will almost certainly never fly here again .

1303684 2012-09-29 07:51:00 On the news now, there's a spitfire circling wanganui with only one wheel coming down. Hope it makes its belly landing safely. Nick G (16709)

Whirlwind and Hornet?

1303686 2012-09-29 08:05:00 Whirlwind yes, but I'm not sure if it's a Hornet (definitely not Nick's Beaufighter).

Yea, wasn't very certain about that at all. Best guess I came up with though - I didn't even think of the hornet.

1303688 2012-09-29 08:13:00 Hornet it is: a de Havilland Hornet F.3 of 64 Squadron (courtesy Wikipedia).

Designed as a private venture for a long-range fighter destined for the Pacific Theatre in the war against Japan, Specification F.12/43 was written around the type. From an early stage it was also envisaged that the Hornet could be adapted for naval use, operating from aircraft carriers. As a result priority was given to ease of control, especially at low speeds, and good pilot visibility. Construction was of mixed balsa/plywood similar to the Mosquito, but the Hornet differed in incorporating stressed Alclad lower-wing skins bonded to the wooden upper wing structure using the then-new adhesive Redux.[1] The two wing spars were redesigned to withstand a higher safety factor of 10 versus 8.[2]
