| 1328729 | 2013-02-19 08:48:00 | Hi all Can I kill windows 8 without reinstalling windows 7? I've heard that windows 8 can be turned off so win 7 is the active system, true? I brought a new machine with windows 8, i've tried to run it on the old style GUI which is good most of the time... Seems there is still a lot I have to cancel out of before it behalves like I want it to.... I have MS Office loaded yet it still wants to use the "apps" to view photo's, use gmail and even the "app" for viewing pdf's. The other thing that I don't like is that it seems to change its security settings by itself, after a couple of months use it now won't let me access gmail without a new security certificate. I think I must be stuck in the old days but I loved my Windows XP. Any idea's?? Thanks |

When you open a file type for the first time, or install a new program that can open that file type, it asks what program you want to open it in. So if you install (say) Photo Gallery then open a photo, it'll ask you what to open it in. Try this. ;) |

| 1328732 | 2013-02-19 09:50:00 | You don't have to use the Apps to open items. Nothing has changed in W8 relating to the making something else the default program - exactly the same as XP. Take a picture as an example - right click - Open With - Choose default program. Select what you want and apply -- Easy ;) Now any picture with the same file extension will open in the program you selected Its the old story - learn how to use the Operating system options. ;) Re the gmail certificate check you date and time settings, if they are out you'll get errors. Also could be gmail About-certificate-errors (windows.microsoft.com) Had one the other day person was jumping up and down saying W8 wouldn't update - problem was the date was set to 2014 ( not there yet) :D |

| 1328733 | 2013-02-19 10:16:00 | Thanks all.... The date trick worked for the security cert. As for the photos, they are all set to open with my default viewer but when I insert the memory card it wants to load (and update) the photo app. Dave |

Here you can change what happens when you insert your memory card. |

| 1328736 | 2013-02-19 20:50:00 | I'm sure if I switched to 8 as my main OS I'd get used to it, but the frustration of having to Google how to do simple tasks all the time until it becomes familiar puts me off. How many people couldn't figure out how to shut it down the first time? And why does Microsoft feel the need to hide such a fundamental function. |
