119689 2003-02-09 09:27:00 Tried to download an 8mb file.....tried 7 times........each time the transfer stops, while connection still OK. Seems to happen at any old time.....half way....80 - 90% complete....whenever!

This particular site....gocyberlink.com....was for powerdvd update.

Is the prob at other end......or my setup?.....or crappy ISP?

Got freshdownload manager........and as yet still wading thru the controls........looks like an alright prog.......tho never had such a bad run as now.

Anyone care to comment.

P.S. I note that on occasion, while downloading, something interferes with the screen saver....it will slow down and is slow to respond.

w2k ver5,build 2195/sp3, duron800, 256ram, ie6(updated),lucent winmodem
average download speed 4.0- 4.5kb/sec, 20km Hamilton central.

119691 2003-02-09 11:52:00 Doesn't DAP have spyware? IF so, you need AdAware as well. Robin S_ (86)

Nope, it downloads a few ads with the proggy that it displays, it hasnt been classified as spyware AFAIK, but ad-aware is something good to ad to your download list when you do get things going smoothly.

Ad-Aware 6 is quite nice indeed :-)

119694 2003-02-10 07:37:00 I'm using Opera 7 and started a download the other night with Star downloader(which I have found to be good in the past), this started at about 4.5K/bits and dropped to abour 4.0K/bits fairly quickly. I could see this download going downhill fast!
I then tried the inbuilt Opera downloader and it started of at 10K/bits.
I know, I know its not real, but it did drop to about 5.3 over 2-3 hours and held up to 4.8 over 20 hours, which I concider pretty good for a country connection!
I would be interested if anyone else has had a good experience with the Opera downloader.

119695 2003-02-10 07:47:00 well i prefer flashget (http://www.amazesoft.com/) myself. however i've never found any difference between various download managers. it all comes down to features. mirror search and file spliting, multi point downing would have to be the best. don't forget what mode the downloader is set to (active, passive).

some of the default options need changing with flashget ;-)

119696 2003-02-10 09:04:00 If you look around on most of these sites you can usually find an ftp address to download the stuff with, then get an app like cuteFTP ( www.cuteftp.com ). With this you can resume your downloads where you left off no matter when they stop.

Bear in mind that not all web sites have an ftp server advertised, but usually they will have one, and most times it is the same address as their website, but with the letters ftp instead of www in the address.

Mike ....define modern re monitors? I have 2....first 1998, second 1993......
both older than the tower. These probably classed as fossils now, hah?

Actually, I am thinking of installing my old pci card and running the two monitors.
Cards: AGP:trident blade 3d, PCI S3 trio 64+
