2003-02-09 08:44:00 | There doesnt appear to be any, I can press escape and Can llok and delete any files in Win Explorer, so whats the point of seperate logons, no security at all. Is there a better / free security program available for WinME?

2003-02-09 08:58:00 | In 98 Ive done it - cant remember how to though, but it was using a combination of Tweak UI and Super Rabbit Magic Set See here (http://www.rescueman.cjb.net) and it basically came up with a list of users at the start, in a small menu box, rather than typing in your name and password. It was select from a list and then enter your password. There was no bypassing it either! I should really have a look into it some time, but for now, feel free to check it out, as I know ME can do it too! Sorry Im not more specific Cheers Chilling_Silence

2003-02-09 10:28:00 | You can make as many fancy logins as you like in any version of 9x/ME, you'll still be wasting your time if you want file & folder security. You'll have to use a 3rd party security/encryption tool on any files & folders you want to protect or hide from prying eyes. This would be enough to keep any kid under 10 out. Even then, anyone that knows a wee bit, can use several easy methods to get to your files way before the computer even boots to windows. If you want better, (but not impenetrable) security go for Win2kpro or XPpro. If you want much better security (still not impenetrable but probably the best a layman can get) go Linux. I had a protection program for 9x but can't remember what it was called, I'll scour my old backup CDs & will post back if I find it.

2003-02-09 18:05:00 | Force Users to Logon to Windows (Windows 95/98/Me) Category: Home > Security > Login and Authentication Usually users can simply press 'Cancel' at the Windows logon box to bypass the login process and gain access to the local computer . This tweak will logout the user if the authentication fails or the user clicks Cancel . Like all registry tweaks, this is for advanced users, please do not attempt to try this if you are not confident with the Windows registry and recovering from any subsequent problems . Firstly, setup your computer for multiple users by using the 'Users' wizard in the Control Panel . Create a new user in addition to any existing users, then restart Windows and login as the new user (this will become your new default account) . While you are logged in open your registry and expand the [HKEY_USERS] key, there should be several sub-folders including " . DEFAULT", "Software" and a folder corresponding to the new username you created above . Open the key listed below (if the 'Run' key does not already exist then create it), and create a new string value named "NoLogon", and set the value to equal "RUNDLL32 shell32,SHExitWindowsEx 0" . Log-off and now when you login using the new username you should gain access to the desktop, but when you press Cancel or enter the wrong password the desktop should partially load, and then the computer should return to the login screen . Note: If you have problems with this tweak, press F8 while the "Starting Windows 98 . . . " boot-up message is showing, and select Safe Mode . Then open your registry and delete the "NoLogon" key created above . Note: Once this tweak has been implemented any subsequent users accounts that are created will inherit the 'NoLogon' value and therefore reboot when they login . To avoid this; when you first create a new user, open the key below for the newly created account name (e . g . [HKEY_USERS\jdoe]) and remove the 'NoLogon' value . (Default) REG_SZ (value not set) NoLogon REG_SZ "RUNDLL32 shell32,SHExitWindowsEx 0" HKEY_USERS\ . DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Run Settings: User Key: [HKEY_USERS\ . DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Run] Name: NoLogon Type: REG_SZ (String Value) Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system . We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved . Use the information provided at your own risk . From WinGuides . You can also set a security password in your Bios .

2003-02-09 21:06:00 | Folder Guard and also FProt (File Protector) can hide files, with Folder Guard being the best of the two. You can set all the rights, just like NTFS, only better... I dont have a URL, but a google search should bring it up no problems :-)

2003-02-10 20:24:00 | yes there is a reg key that will disable esc or cancel at logon sceen in regedit and do the following go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon Create the "Logon" subkey if it is not present on your machine: highlight the Network key -> right-click in the left hand Regedit pane -> select New -> Key -> name it "Logon" (no quotes) -> press Enter. Then add/modify a DWORD value and call it "MustBeValidated" (don't type the quotes). Double-click it, check the Decimal box and type 1 for value. Now click the Start button -> Shut Down (Log off UserName) -> Log on as a different user, and you'll notice that the Logon Cancel button has been disabled. you can also stop users from seting up new users at logon by useing microsoft family logon which is set up in the network control panel this will display only set up users with no way to make a new user untill you have loged on, but i cant remember exactly how it is set up
