119427 2003-02-08 11:07:00 duron 800, 256MB, AGP Trident blade 3d, win2k

Computer locks up every few minutes........after installing AGP card.

Cntrl/alt/del does not work....only reboot will revive it.

CLUES:....... When it locks, part of the screen goes black.
.............Installed latest w2k driver from Trident.
.............on IRQ 9---shared with modem,pci audio,USB controller.
.............DMA enabled---sysinfo reports status OK
.............Res 800x600 32 bit 60hz
.............directx 9.0 (4.09.0000.0900)diag reports no probs found.
.............patch 4294967295 installed (improve AGP/Duron compatible)
.............latest microsoft updates installed
.............AGP card on m'soft hardware compatible list for w2k.
.............hardware acceleration,,,full.

Should AGP card run with DIME or DMA....can anyone clarify? How to check?

Comments, tips invited

119428 2003-02-08 20:28:00 Did you remove previous Video card drivers before installing new ones? If not done in the correct order, you will get all sorts of conflicts.

119429 2003-02-08 21:20:00 Originally I did not remove the old pci card or driver...........now it's gone and I uninstalled/re-installed AGP.

Notes: best improvement has been from undated driver.........now only crashes once every 20mins..........probably would not crash at all if no disk activity!....
but of what use?

Have been researching and trying hints from websites for about 8 hours now.
Learnt a lot if nothing else!

Ideas, hints invited.

119430 2003-02-08 21:38:00 Try updating the chipset drivers for the motherboard. And the AGP card should be using DMA. You could check this with a program called Powerstrip which is shareware from Entech Taiwan. John Grieve (367)
119431 2003-02-08 22:14:00 You mentioned that the AGP card is using IRQ 9. To the best of my knowledge, they do not require one. Just looked at my system - using SiSoft - and it is not used. SiSoft Sandra is a freebie with PC User Feb edition and very usefull for conflict checking etc.

119432 2003-02-09 03:49:00 Hit the nail on the head with recommendation to update chipset drivers..........
got them off www.amd.com
No problems since..........running OK for about 3 hours now!!.....thanks John.

Had powerstrip but uninstalled in an effort to fix crashes.....may re-install now or if need arises.........real good tweaker program!

119433 2003-02-09 04:06:00 Peter H.....
here's a copy of IRQ settings:

as reported by sysinfo........and confirmed by FreshDiagnose
IRQ:
11 microsoft ACPI-compliant system
9 Trident video accelerator blade 3d v5.8064
9 amd 765 pci to usb open host controller
9 lucent winmodem
9 sm32x2 pci audio (wdm)
8 system clock/real time clock
13 numeric data processor
1 standard 101/102 key...
6 std floppy disk controller
4 com1
3 com2
14 primary ide channel
15 secondary ide channel

.....question is where are missing IRQ numbers? 2,5,7,10,12.......and why 4 items on 9?

..... problem appears fixed,.... tho am curious about above......... perhaps someone can enlighten?
