120065 2003-02-10 13:54:00 Hi there,

My friend got this error from his Win XP PC:

-----
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE-BOOT-VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer. it this screen appears again, follow these steps:
check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. if
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates your might need.
if problem continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode.

It's a recently bought PC and I forgot which processor he has but definitely higher than P3 1.1 G and should have enough Ram installed. The hardware are properly installed, so how can I help him out of this crisis? I searched the Microsoft KB with the words "UNMOUNTABLE-BOOT-VOLUME" but didn't get the exact error message as above, any ideas?

Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

120066 2003-02-10 17:48:00 Was this a new fully assembled PC from a retailer?

If so I would consider taking it to them to sort out. My guess is that the the harddrive is malfunctioning.

120067 2003-02-10 20:08:00 Hello,

I struck this problem, a few weeks ago, and it was caused by my installing an update to a program I use.

it partially locked the computer, not allowing it to boot into safemode, or any other mode, or allowing windows to boot normally.

If this is what is happening to you,

Unfortunately, the only way out I found, was to format and do a full recovery. The HP computer I have, has no recovery disc, and pressing f10, at startup started a wizard reinstalling wn xp back to factory specs.

If you have a recovery disc, then hopefully you should get the same result. Unfortunatley all information you have on the computer will be lost.

good luck,

Robby

120068 2003-02-11 03:35:00 Search Google using UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME as the key, lots of good help there. godfather (25)
120069 2003-02-11 04:30:00 I'm with JM: If it's new and broken, back to the shop. That's what guarantees are for. Trying to "fix" it yourself can give (good) grounds for refusing guarantee service. Graham L (2)
120070 2003-02-11 11:38:00 Hi everyone,

My friend assembled his own PC, so packaged warranty not included. However, I'm pretty sure he assembled the PC correctly!

Anyway, thanks for all your advices... and how can I forget about Google? Thanks for reminding... now I'll try searching first and see if I can find a way.

Of course any more advices or help are very much appreciated... thanks again.
