120054 2003-02-10 10:58:00 It really depends whether you have a permanent internet connection (cable, JetStart/Stream, etc) or a dial-up connection. With a permanent connection you are assigned an exclusive IP address but with a dial-up you are assigned a different number every time you connect. I think your precautions are more than adequate for a dial-up connection. Rod J (451)
120055 2003-02-10 11:14:00 Your IP can always be found out..... as far as I am aware. -=JM=- (16)
120056 2003-02-10 20:50:00 What do you mean by "protect"????

If you mean protect it from getting taken by others and reserving it for yourself.. YES
You just have to either bribe your ISP, or go on Cable, or some other fast permanant connection. DSL aka jetstream etc does not usually give fixed IP.

If you mean protect your computer from some one getting in, then you are on the right track

If you mean hide it so others cant see what it is, well yes you can do that to, but it means surfing the net though a proxy that does this for you. There are some sites that offer this service.. It is a really good way to slow things down for yourself and congest the net in general.

120057 2003-02-10 21:32:00 I want to protect so people cannot hack into me and know my IP address.

I am on T1 connection via LAN (work) and modem (at home).

120058 2003-02-10 21:50:00 Do you have a dedicated IT department at work? If so I would inquire as to whether they have a firewall in place. It is likely that they will, if so there is no need to protect your computer. As for home it sounds like you have more than enough protection in place if you are using Zone alarm etc. BIFF (1)
120059 2003-02-10 22:03:00 OK.. when you do almost anything, you are giving out your IP. This is how the internet works.

"Hello IP1 this here is IP2, now gizza look at your webpage"
"Hello IP2 , IP1 here, and heres the page"

As you can see it is almost impossible for this to work without letting all you deal with know where you are.

For home i suggest that you avoid staying connected 24/7 so your IP will change.
Also avoid IM programs, as these tend to advertise that user (insert name here) is corrently on line at (insert IP address here)

I also think that unless you invite people, or have reason why you should be targetted, you'll be fine with what you have.

120060 2003-02-10 22:13:00 Am with 56k dialup with Clear Net normally 3-5hr a day or so....
Yes work does have a Proxy Server and Firewall with username/password authentication. Protocols used are HTTPS .... no SOCKS.
