119972 2003-02-10 07:26:00 I'm thinking of creating a server but I'm not sure what the best method should be for internet connection.

Should I make all the computers connect to a proxy running on the Server then to the Internet (router on Ethernet) or should I just make all computers run straight to the Internet on their network to lessen the load on the server.

Is there advantages in doing it either way?

If I make all the computers connect to the server then to the internet the router will come off the server computer only and won't exist on their LAN which means they can't bypass the server to be able to get to the internet.

119973 2003-02-10 08:39:00 Forcing traffic through the server has some advantages, such as being able to have a firewall and virus scan software (and proxy) on it that will filter out bad traffic coming into (or going out of) your network, and means that if you put content screening on the server all computers accessing the internet will be filtered of bad stuff like pr0n, possibly warez, stuff like that. agent (30)
119974 2003-02-10 08:53:00 That's a good idea. I just figured out some other problems having the server connected straight to the net but I'll do it that way. I'll just need to make another computer running a linux firewall between the internet and the server for added protection. Kame (312)

If you are looking at having a dedicated firewall PC then I wouldn't worry about going through the server as well. Just connect the router to the firewall and then the rest of the network connects to the firewall.

I've found smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org) to be quite good and comes with quite a few features like DHCP With it also having the ability to set up a green and orange interface it means that you have a location seperate to your network that can have web servers on. The only problem with it is that it will remove all data from the hard drive that you install it on.
