119768 2003-02-09 21:17:00 It seems that there is trouble in paradise.. not too bad, just a proxy server that makes some sites inoperable for paradise users.
203.98.49.150

The first site i noticed this on is Liam's CF1 (http://www.chatf1.net.nz). What the problem did was make CF1 unusable as no fresh data could get through, so any paradise customer who posted would get logged out almost every time.
At first i was questioning everything else, until the penny dropped with Liam, who realized that it was only paradise customers having these bizarre problems.

Paradise have emailed me and assure me they are excluluding chatf1.net.nz and farr.net.nz from the proxy server. Hopefully that will solve that problem.

Another site that won't work at home via paradise cable, but works fine here in Greymouth where i connect via snap is registerdirects control site. www.registerdirect.co.nz
I use this to add/change e-mail addresses on my domains.

A common theme seems to be that both these sites essentially work by providing us with a form which we fill in and then see the page refresh. this seems to be where the otherwise invisible proxy spits the dummy.

Anyone else experiencing these problems should e-mail postmaster@paradise.net.nz

Don't bother with the help desk.. i tried that and was told that "paradise do not use proxys" and "we don't recommend that the customer uses a proxy server" the second helper was atleast prepared to admit that the problem was beyond her control, and provided me with the above e-mail address.

119769 2003-02-09 22:32:00 I agree, it's completely pointless calling the monkeys at helpdesk, 9/10 times you get; "We do not have a proxy, goodbye", occasionally the random factor kicks in and you get a semi-intelligent monkey; "Ah yes, yes yes, we have had problems like that in the past with our proxys, I'll just write a note to the sys admin".

Incidentally; was that registerdirect page based on php?

I see no PHP in it, it just appears to be a standard simple html page with dynamicly produced pages that alter as you add/change/manage your email account(s) etc.

The common thing seems to be an inability of paradises proxy to allow the accurate renewing of any page that was changed as a result of a form being filled in

119771 2003-02-09 23:00:00 I think that it maybe be more of a problem with their servers handling dynamic content. What ever the reason, what bugs be is that they are using a proxy, and an out of date one at that. nz_liam (845)
119772 2003-02-10 01:13:00 Simple. Dont use the proxy server. I never have yet. Big John (551)

It's not that easy if paradise route the traffic through the server for you

The server is not a volentary thing, as far as my connection is concerned no proxys are in use. As far as reality is concerned, the server that i "don't" use has just recently got a little more agressive, and stopped being invisible. It is a matter of letting paradise know that certain sites should not be cached.

Most of use use proxy servers without realising it. I'd much rather (as a rule) see data fly in from a server with a 9ms ping to me than one with that xtra 200ms. All ISPs have to route traffic through their servers, and will for reasons of effeciancy ususally make some key point a proxy server. Unfortunatly paradises has got a little too vicous in recent time, and needs alittle tweaking.

If that was true then at least 50% of my data allocation would be national traffic but yet when I check out of the 9 . 8GB I used last month only about 600MB was national traffic . Yes I do know they have those hidden poxy servers to keep there traffic down but there are ways around them if you know how . I have never had a problem with Paradise or IHug as far as proxy servers go .

119776 2003-02-10 03:47:00 I know for a fact that Xtra has a proxy server and to what I know some times just as bad as Paradises one. stu140103 (137)
119777 2003-02-10 04:02:00 IMHO they should give the user the option of using it - not forcing all the traffic thru it! Chilling_Silence (9)
