120073 2003-02-10 20:27:00 Hi.
I'm upgrading tomorrow and have a couple of options as far as motherboards go. I want to get the KT400 chipset for future compatability and speed reasons.
I'm looking at a Gigabite GV-7VA (tw.giga-byte.com) and a Soltek SL KT400 (www.soltekusa.com)

The Gigabite supports 8x whereas the soltek doesn't but the gigabite only supports it at 1.5v what does this mean?

What else can you tell me about these boards in general?
Thanks in advance

120074 2003-02-10 21:45:00 I personally prefer the gigabyte one myself but check prices on http://www.pricespy.co.nz/ for all components kiwibeat (304)
120075 2003-02-10 21:58:00 I know all about pricespy etc. But basically I want to know what preferences people have.
Why do you prefer Gigabyte?

120076 2003-02-10 22:26:00 Latest issue Aus PC User, reports a lot of problems wirh Via's KT400 chipsets. Depends on what CPU you will be using. It doesn't work with AMD Athlon XP 2800+ or 2700+ Worth buying the Mag, as plenty of M/B reviews.

120077 2003-02-10 22:28:00 Interesting! I'll be sticking a 1800+ in it. Are you able to give me any short details on the issues Peter? roofus (483)
120078 2003-02-10 22:49:00 If there is any way at all that you could stretch to the Asus A7N8X Deluxe.... do so :D.

I've got the Gigabyte GA-7VRXP and it seems to go fine though.

120079 2003-02-11 01:21:00 Australian PC User - Feb 2003 edition. Board they tested was GA-7VAXP - worked OK on a Athlon XP 2200+ but appears not to handle the latest 333 FSB Athlon XP chips. Might be worth a look at "Tom's Hardware Guide" site, and see what they say, but should be OK with your CPU.

120080 2003-02-11 01:23:00 Oh thats ok, The KT400 chipset as far as i know still runs at 266FSB anyway. So no wonder it wouldn't work. roofus (483)
120081 2003-02-11 01:26:00 Oh no, it is a 33mhzFSB as well, interesting, i wonder whether it can be fixed with a bios flash?

So whats the deal with the 1.5 volt thing with AGP? it says its AGP 3.0 compliant which means it can handle 8x fine

120082 2003-02-11 01:28:00 From the article, it seem the KT400 is a renamed KT333A.
