120299 2003-02-11 19:23:00 Good morning all I think I have a virus. My operating system is Windows 2000 Professional. I can't boot, get a message :
"the following file is missing/corrupt - \WINNT\SYSTEM32|CONFIG\SYSTEM" and then it tells me to "start with CD-ROM" I'm not sure (precise details) how to do this - can someone help. I had a similar problem about a year ago, and my son talked me through the problems. I still have those instructions, but I can't seem to remember how to get that CD-ROM start going.

Now I am at work, and will only have time to get to a computer at breaks. I hope i have given you enough information......

Many thanks.

120300 2003-02-11 19:33:00 ?Why are you using win2000 if your not confident with a computer?

What the system is telling you is that you need to boot from the win200 CD.
Usually sticking the CD in the drive and turning the computer on should do the trick.
Otherwise you will have to enter into the BIOS (PressF1 or ESC at startup)
in there will be options for the boot sequence, you will have to change it so that the CD-rom is first in the boot sequence.

What makes you think this is a virus? Sounds like a corrupt file to me, which could have happened for a number of reasons.
In any case do you not have a virus scanner running to avoid a possible virus attack?

Now now, roofus.... be nice to Mrs Mac. She will have her reasons for having that OS. :|

R.M.: You will have to switch your computer on to enable power that will allow the CD drive to open. Once you can open the CD drawer, put your Windows disc in, close the drawer then either press the reset button or switch the computer off and then back on again after 10 seconds. Hopefully the computer will then boot up from the CD.

If it doesn't then it may not be set up to boot from a CD and you will have to get into the BIOS like roofus says to change it.

120302 2003-02-11 20:18:00 Boot from the Win2K CD and hit tell it that you wanna Repair your install rather than Install a fresh copy :-)

Try that and it may fix your errors!

Now what was that for? Why is it different from any of the rest?

120303 2003-02-11 20:23:00 Thankyou, and yes i have my reasons for using Windows 2000 Professional!

Someone I sent an email with a PDF attachment has reported back to me that the file had a virus (Nortons 2003 foundit/reported it). This was just prior to the "problems' beginning.

As to all of the other useful advise - thank you, I think I have tried all that, including going into BIOS and changing the boot sequence.

And as far as using a virus scanner, I do, 2 of them, Nortons 2003, and AVG, and MialWasher as well. I am pretty religious about keeping it all up to date, and bouncing anything I suspect.

The instructions I was given last year, when I had another problem with similar symptoms (considered to be probably a virus by my "expert in the family" ) included the statement:
"press any key to boot from cd rom", well "any key" doesn't, nor does it get me to the next stage:
"press R to repair installation"
"Press C to enter repair console"

So.... where to from here??

Continuing thanks for your interest and replies!

120304 2003-02-11 20:36:00 Wasn't ment to be snarky in my original comment, must have come across like that cause of the time in the morning :-)

Note: you SHOULD NOT run 2 antivirus programmes, They will end up conflicting with each other, then you will have no protection.

Your next task should be to enter the repair console and see if you can repair it, otherwise do as Chilling says

120305 2003-02-12 00:39:00 Mrs Mac: Try holding the Ctrl key down when you switch the computer on. That might give you the menu which your instruction sheet refers to. Graham L (2)
