| 120383 | 2003-02-13 01:00:00 | I often refer people to google, giving a search string which I know will give useful links. I am not going to copy out a helpful posting somewhere else because (a) It's not ethical. (b) it's a waste of disk space. (c) I will make typing errors. (d) If I condense it, I will leave out essential parts. (e) I can find more interesting things to do than reinventing documentation. I believe it's helping people to give search strings. I've found using search engines frustrating, too. I have learned to do it. I often refer people to FAQs, Linux HOWTOs, application home sites, etc. I do that because I know them to be well written (mostly) and the result of experience of a lot of people who know more than me. Again, I am not going to copy or edit such things. I will point to appropriate sections when neccessary, but I think it's reasonable to expect people to try to understand what they are doing. Often reading parts which don't apply to their present problem will help people avoid other problems. It's important to keep the personal element here, but that does not include personal abuse. Since using an OS seems to be a very personal thing, abuse of OSs is out of place too. :D Calling a spade a bloody shovel shouldn't upset anyone, but it's technically wrong. If a computer or programme is not working, your anger is best vented in the open air, well away from keyboards. The computer doesn't care what you call it. |

| 120384 | 2003-02-13 01:11:00 | Took me about 8 months of browsing(?) this site before I felt confident enough to ask something! Now have had this PC for 2 years-yeh,out of warranty, scary thought! And this site has been a god-send to me.Even just reading the posts every day has taught me a lot.Especially the posts where someone has found a new free program to try,and is willing to help in setup problems. So thanks all who help here. :-) | Neil McC (178) | ||
| 120385 | 2003-02-13 03:14:00 | why did Baldy have to start another post just asking Chilling for a formal apology? [:O wow! what a suprise :p] *i wonder why people would link to your profile if you have done nothing to harm. if you're helpful people would only refer to you if they think theres some amazing others should know about* hopefully you've learned your lesson by now, and we can get on with proper helpful advice again :) |

| 120386 | 2003-02-13 03:37:00 | Sy> I dont think that really helps. I think that it was fair of baldy to start a new thread, and I apologised. If I were in his position, and I had felt singled out, I would have done the same :-) As for linking to the profile, every time you post, it makes a link to it! |
