| 120537 | 2003-02-14 01:40:00 | >>> Now, is it "noe-kee-a" or "noh-kee-a"? noh-kee-a :) I had a friend who worked for them for quite a while (including many many trips to head office in Finland) and that's how he pronounced it, so hopefully he'd know... Mike. |

Obviously the American influence is becoming stronger and stronger, but the other factor is distance from Europe, so that "correct" pronunciation for words of non-english origin is seldom heard here, despite the much wider travel and communications today: Cache, from french , pronounced cash not caish. Coupé, also from french, pronounced coopay, not coop. :) :) :) A coop is where hens live, a coupé is a car (or a type of horse drawn carriage) Then the other funnies reflecting the 'Great Vowel' change, pins & pens; yin & yen, we've already had alice and ellis. Back to the loony bin :D |
