| 120212 | 2003-02-11 06:22:00 | Just having a collection of strange boot-up etc problems with Win98. Among other things result is some setup files don't run. Done usual diagnostics but haven't come up with much. Suspect a worm DATOM which got in when someone else was using my machine might be implicated. When booting, screen seems to repeat itself several times over. Bootlog gives some support to this but I'm not sure how much. Before doing anything particularly drastic to sort this out, I just want to know if anyone has come across the phrase "If you want to run DOS legary game .." (yes, legary, not legacy) which flashes up at least twice during booting. I suspect this is probably harmless, maybe to do with soundblasters, but just want another opinion. |

| 120213 | 2003-02-11 06:46:00 | Boot into safe mode. Look in C:\Autoexec.bat for anything that is suspicious. Write it down and delete it (just in case it's needed). Possibly other locations for places this would be executed C:\Windows\Win.ini in the Load= or Run= lines. |

| 120215 | 2003-02-12 00:28:00 | "Dos legary game" to google produces three links. The third one, in Japanese, refers to Sound Blaster Pro. But I doubt if a sound card is going to cause your boot problems. If a card is not configured right, it will not work. It's Windows 98 which seems to have the problem. If you know a worm has had a nibble, make sure that it has been exterminated, and what it did cleaned up. |

| 120216 | 2003-02-12 01:19:00 | Thanks Graham . reply appreciated . I did check out Google and concluded it (DOS legary) wasn't the problem . Took Kame's suggestion of checking out autoexec . bat . Did it through MSCONFIG (no need for safe mode) although I thought I had disabled autoexec . bat a long time ago . Funny but it seemed activated again I don't know why . Autoexec . bat now deactivated and the message no longer appears . However I still had my problems of Win98 boot and stuffed up scanner that was dead on Win98 . The DATOM worm I have had three times now despite regularly updated AVG . First time it stuffed up Notepad, second time it stuffed up MGI Photosuite, third time it stuffed up the scanner (probably the TWAIN) driver, that wouldn't work and wouldn't reinstal from installation disc . However I have everything working fine now . But did rahter hopesomeone would give me the excuse to delete the entire Win98 registry and reinstal, since it accumulates slowing-down junk over time despite jv16powertools or other reg cleaners . Also I am a bit oversensitive after the DATOM attack and tend to be suspicious of unexplained things that suddenly appear such as DOS legary . |
