120805 2003-02-13 04:01:00 hey..
\i brought a HPinvent deskjet5550 printer..and got home, realised that the connnection via parrell or usb has to be purchased separately...and i was saved by the fact that i had purchased a connection for my old printer which is now dead...mmmm but what i need to know is....will it work on this new one as it was purchased for a lexmark printer...and i plugged the parrell one into the new printer and it fits..both on computer tower..and in printer...and no its not installed or electonically plugged in..coz i dont wanna risk it...but can u tell me is it safe to use this? or should i purchase a different or new one?

120806 2003-02-13 04:08:00 A "printer cable" is a printer cable. :D Or it used to be. :-( The old parallel cable with a DB25P on one end and 26 pin "Centronics" connector will not harm your printer or computer.

But if it's an old one, the printer might not work "properly". The new IEE1284 cables have slightly different construction (of the wires)for better behaviour with newer hardware.

If it works perfectly, which it probably will, that will be nice. But if there is any problem, get a new IEEE1284 cable. After checking that the port has been set to the appropriate setting of SPP, EPP, EC. The manual will tell you which it wants.

Surely there would have at least been a parallel cable with the unit. Was it brand new? were you advised of this when you purchased it? as surely I would be insisting that they supply at least one, if not both cables.

120808 2003-02-13 04:19:00 Sorry Sam, that's the way it is. They sell the printers cheap, and the ink dear. Cables? :O Far too expensive to include with the printer. :D Graham L (2)
