120595 2003-02-12 07:45:00 I got the following email from someone known to me, addressed to "Undisclosed Recipient"

<<A virus has been passed on to me and my address book in turn it has been infected.
Since you are in my address book there is a chance that you will find it in your computer too.
The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or Macafee anti virus system.
This virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system.
It is sent automatically by messenger and the address book, whether or not you send emails to your contacts.
Here is how to check for the virus and get rid of it.
1. Go to Start, Find or Search option.
2. In the file/folders option type the name: jdbgmgr.exe
3. Be sure you search your C -Drive and all the sub -folders and any other drives you may have.
4. Click: "Find now"
5. The virus has a grey teddy bear with the name jdbgmgr.exe -DO NOT OPEN IT.
6. Go to the edit (on the menu bar) and choose SELECT ALL to highlight the file without opening it.
7. Now go to the File (on the menu bar) and select DELETE. It will then go to the recycle bin.
8. Go to the Recycle bin and delete it there as well.
IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, you must contact all the people in your address book so they can eradicate it in
their own address books.
To do this:
1. Open a new email message/
2. Click the icon of the address book next to the "To"
3. Highlight every name and add to "BCC"
4. Copy the message, enter subject and paste to email, and send.
REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO DO THIS VERY QUICKLY.
You do not need to contact me to let me know whether or not you have/had the virus.
I do offer my apologies if you receive this message more than once.>>

Questions: - Is this virus known?
- Is the recommended action appropriate?
- Especially, should I contact people in MY Address Book,
or will this spread nasties?

120598 2003-02-12 08:31:00 Yes, thanks falvrez and stu14003..I see I've been well had. It got me going because the sender is a sensible person with lots of computing experience. Just goes to show. And yes, I do have an anti-virus programme which of course didn't give a peep through all this!Cheers. Shortstop (632)
120599 2003-02-12 08:45:00 Hi Shortstop,
Next time you get an Email telling you have a virus :

1. Do a Google search on the 'so called virus' all the good AV sites will tell you if it's a hoax or not.

2. Tell the sender to do the same. Hopefully this might help stop the spreading of 'Spam' as that's what it is. The more people that get into the habit of checking it out first the better.

3. Make sure you keep your AV up to date.

So many people panic when they get these Emails & go & do what it tells them to.

Pauline.
