120837 2003-02-13 06:14:00 I think it's safe to say you can now ignore my request for helphere (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). I'm not sure, but this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) may also be affected.

After doing some searching on the net, I came across this lovely site which gave me a big kick up the butt as to what has happened.

The following URLs may explain the situation very clearly:
forum.firmware-flash.com
forum.firmware-flash.com
forum.firmware-flash.com

It seems that Samsung Combo drives are failing rather quickly because it uses a "new and revolutionary single lens technology", which means multiple lasers are needed. Apparently, these are wearing down quite quickly.

If you have a problem with a Samsung Combo drive where it either doesn't read any CDs, or reads any CDs apart from DVDs, or only reads DVDs, or of course any other combination, you may be suffering the same thing that has happened to many other people.

Before going out and buying a new drive, try updating the firmware, or putting a CD/DVD cleaner in your drive, in case the lens is dirty. It may also be that the laser is misaligned. Here are a few firmware update pages: Samsung (www.samsungelectronics.com), Etna pages (etna.rpc1.org) (this is actually for region free updates, to be installed after you've installed the latest official firmware).

Other than that, I feel very very dissappointed and angry. My Combo drive is about six months old. If I don't discover that it's only a dirty lens or old firmware, I'll be even more angry. I don't think that my drive will still be under warranty, and according to Firmware Flash (http://forum.firmware-flash.com), it's cheaper to buy a new drive.

120838 2003-02-13 06:52:00 I guess I'm lucky - my drive was manufactured in April 2002, which means it is not past the 15 month warranty period! :D
Perhaps I can weedle a DVD writer out of them... ;\
