120705 2003-02-12 23:29:00 Hello there press F1 people
A small problem maybe, have had a look at the FQA's but not quite what I'm after, I think so here goes:

In Windows Explorer C Drive in the Windows Folder there is a Folder <Temporary Internet Files>.
If I click on that I can Delete all files, thats OK.
But under <Temporary Internet Files> there is another Folder named <Content IE5> with four more Folders under that Folder, named <HMNUM294 and LY5XD8U4 and RADPLPO4 and WXMB01Q3>. ?:|
Now under each of those Folders there are 131 objects total 2,825 KB. (not all that much I grant you) but what the hell are they there for and would it be safe to delete them.
When I go to delete them I get a message saying:
<The Folder: HMNUM294 is a System Folder, If you Delete it, Windows or another program may no longer work correctly. Are you sure you want to delete this folder and move all its contents to the Recycle Bin?> Yes/No ?:|

That goes for all the Folders.
Most of them are GIF images of buttons and squares and the odd corner or three.?? ?:|
And the rest are Web pages with very little on them.
Like a line or two of text or a link. ?:|

If I copied the <Content IE5> Folder to another partition on my Hard Drive then Deleted the said Folder from the C Drive and if something did not work or go wrong, all I have to do is move them back again and all would be ok.?? :^O

cheers carol ;-)

120706 2003-02-13 00:16:00 I beleive those sub folders that you are seeing would be ok to delete as well as they appear from what you write to contain gif's and ads etc from the various web sites you have been visiting .

It has been a long time since I cleaned that folder out manually as I use a program called WindowWasher to do it but from what I can remember I used to delete all those sub folders as well without worry .

If in doubt though, you have a couple of options, either wait for someone else to give you there opinion or rename the sub folders to something like
HMNUM294 . 13Feb03 , this way if windows is looking for a file from that folder you will get a error message . Chances are though, you will visit a web site such as F1 and it might load not as quick this time as it downloads all the images, etc from the page to your TempInternet Folder .

120707 2003-02-13 00:51:00 have a look here here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). if you are cleaning out the temp internet files then you might as well delete the index.dats as well. you can delete everything in the temp internet files.

(hope links work, post back if they don't)

120708 2003-02-13 04:06:00 From memory those additional folders under the Content IE5 folder have something to do with your computer's security while browsing the web . You will notice that the folder names do change . I cannot remember the exact details on why they are all there like that but as the others have said it is OK to delete them .

If you are game enough to look for it there is a thread with an explanation for the folders somewhere on the forum .

120709 2003-02-13 04:33:00 If it's called "Temporary", they presumably can be deleted. In fact it's "certain". Some of them will be buttons downloaded when they were needed. If they're so small, why not leave them ... they'll probably be needed again.

The one which is referred to as involving Windows probably gives a watning because Windows Explorer uses them. You might have problems removing those files while running Windows. It's like the Windows TMP files ... you mustn't remove them while the session/task that created them is running.
