120967 2003-02-14 08:41:00 I would just leave it the way it is, and go on enjoying using it. Its sounds like your friend needs his computer partioned because he needs it that way for his job. For the majority of home users its not neccessary.

You probably find computers a big mystery, but as the months go by and you get more familiar, you will find them pretty straight-forward

120968 2003-02-14 11:21:00 Partitioning drives does not void warranties, in NZ.

Whether it's best for you and your needs is up to you - there are plenty of discussions on these options via the search link at top of this page.

Well I can help a bit with the language.

FORMAT
Deletes all files, folders and programs on the partition and rebuilds all tables so they are nice and empty and ready to start again.
Useful to get rid of all the nasties that build up but A Method of Last Resort.

RESTORE
A feature that came out in recent versions of Windows. You can roll back in time a bit to before things went wrong.

UPDATE
Can be hardware or software. eg upgrading to a new printer, upgrading a program to the latest version.
Some "updates" for programs may actually be a delete and replace - get rid of the old one and put a completely new version in. Others can be an update - eg Windows, update with the latest patches.
Sometimes an update can be free - eg update Win 98 with patches; other times it can cost - eg update Win 98 to Win 2000

120970 2003-02-17 11:43:00 Okay i havent tried the C+E and D+F system but theoretically if D dissappears then F will change to D? and if so wont that cause confusion in that it needs the folder locations changed?

I Agree that ghosting or backup up the drive is good and definitly keeping the data seperate from the programs in several make sense, although this application seems so far to cause some added hassles although perhaps you can enlighten me more on this method.

120971 2003-02-18 23:51:00 How complicated. Just buy GHost. Ghost the HDD to a CD.
SImple.

120973 2003-02-20 22:53:00 What is Ghost ?.................basically it is just a program that will make a copy of your hard drive(s) onto a CD(s) so if you suffer a crash or are suffering problems and decide to reformat and start again, you just copy the CD back to your hard drive(s) and carry on rather than the other way of reformatting, reloading all the drivers, all the programs, tweaking all the settings........... 120974 2003-02-20 23:00:00 Hello,

i would suggest checking the definition on www.norton.com for the ghost product, which is not the only option but perhaps a common one.

Ghost as the name implies allows copying of either partition, partitions, or whole drives to other partitions, drives, or other areas if support such as to a network destination, printer port to another machine, CD Writable or CD Rewritable afaik.

The implies basically a 'ghost' image which can be of varying type.

The ghost program comes in various releases and the only versions i know of myself are personal, professional and corporate aimed at particular functions uses. There may be perhaps more than this as it is not something i have studied indepth.

The concept of the reasons for backing up should also be consdiered but i would recommend you lookup a decent article regarding that which encompasses alot of the details perhaps rather than a few paragraph summary which perhaps also applies in this message that it may well not encompass everything, which could be resolved by looking at www.norton.com, the maker of the product.
