120947 2003-02-13 18:01:00 I decided to back up my collection of apps and utilitiy files (mainly .zip .exe and .txt) to a cdwr disk using Nero multi session. No problem except that regardless of the properties of the files prior to copying to cd they all end up as 'read only' and are impossible to delete from cd. I've tried unticking the 'read only' box but it won't change. I'm using win 98 OS. Appreciate some help. Marcus (2414)
120948 2003-02-13 19:34:00 The way you have written the files to the CD will not allow you do manually delete them in Windows Explorer (like a floppy disc).

What you need to do, if that's how you want to use the CDRW, is format it using InCD (should be installed otherwise will be on the CD that came with the CDRW drive). Then you can use the CDRW like a big floppy disc.

I too will be interested in the answer to this one. I recently used this means of doing a quick and dirty transfer of data files from an old system to a not-so-old system. The transfer was great but every file ended up as read only.

120950 2003-02-13 20:01:00 The problem I have found with theInCD format is that the CD can't be accessed from an ordinary cd-rom drive. Marcus (2414)
120951 2003-02-13 20:34:00 Go to this page (www.nero.com) and then select InCD from top drop down menu and Utilities from other one. This should allow you to read CDRW's in ordinary CD-ROM drives.

As for the read-only files, this is normal when copied from a CDR/CDRW. You have to change the file attributes to be able to modify them again.

BUT if you use InCD and format the CDRW then put files on it, you should be able to modify them as normal.

120952 2003-02-13 22:56:00 Hi CYaBro

I'm about to dip my toe into the CD burning waters, having recently purchased a Samsung CDRW bundled with Nero.

Which of that raft of utilities are needed and what are they used for?

There seems to be a general lack of information to help people get started and quite clearly there are some useful tips, techniques and utilities around that could smooth the process. Is there a CDRW for Dummies site anywhere?

Cheers

When I burn files to a CD they become read only too. However, once I copy them back to my harddrive the copy on the harddrive is no longer read only.

I used to receive files on CD from my business partner (done on her computer). Once I copied them onto my computer they remained read only. However, when I opened the files (mainly Word), edited I could then save them under a new name which meant the new files were no longer read only.

Of course you will be looking for a better solution than that.

120954 2003-02-13 23:57:00 As CYaBro says, the read only file atribute is normal after copying to cd-r/w.

There is a free utility that will change the attribute for all files for the file extension & drive you specify in one hit. It's called Arcset, and is available from here:

120955 2003-02-14 00:19:00 Thanks CYaBro, I downloaded the 'EasyWriteReader' utility and it works perfectly...I can now use the InCD format which I prefer and read the disk on any CD drive.
Many Thanks..... thank also to Oxie and Bazza, I will check out the 'Arcset' utility; sounds useful.
