121506 2003-02-15 09:43:00 howsit folks

i have a hp vectra pentium 1 133 mhz pc running windows 95. now the problems is that when u boot it, it shows the hp vectra splash screen and gets to 16% and then just stays there, no error msg or anything it just hangs and stays there. it says hit f2 to go into the setup screen but hitting f2 doesnt work. now i tried to boot it without the HD case it mightve been the connection. usually it would say I/O error replace HD and hit any key, but even when u boot without the HD, it does the same thing..the hp vectra splash screen loads to 16% and just hangs which leads me to believe it isnt anything to do with the hard drive, also the same thing happens even when trying to boot with a windows boot floppy.
someone help meeeeeeeeeee!!

121508 2003-02-15 10:46:00 Just remember, this isn't a 24 hour helpline, not everyone is up at these hours.

Now (not sure exactly how HPs work, because they seem to design them so you don't see what's happening during boot up - probably so that you can't go to places like PressF1 and report what the BIOS error actually is. Or maybe it's to hide the continuous string of errors HPs go through before loading :p), it may be a BIOS error, but because of HPs intrusive splash screens (someone should make a lawsuit against them for these), you won't be able to tell. Is there a way to disable the splash screen? Or try pressing F2 before it gets to 16%, see if that works. Is your keyboards numlock light on? Does HDD activity stop?

121510 2003-02-15 12:08:00 Hi Term,

What you could try is tapping the F8 key as soon as you boot . This should enable the Safe Mode screen . From there you can try Step by Step Confirmation (possibly choice No4) . This will load each of the modules/drivers one at a time .

Whichever driver causes the computer to hang may let you know where the problem lies or at least point to a possible cause .
