121439 2003-02-15 03:52:00 I had my old softeware ghosted to a new computer, running Windows 98 Second Edition, and IE6 with Outlook Express. Now I cannot print messages in OE, (although ok on monitor) a garbled mixture of letters, symbols and figures. Printer works fine with word processing programs, and messages cut and copied from OE to a WP print perfectly.
Glad of any help, Edgar

121440 2003-02-15 20:40:00 Couple of thoughts here..........

Open a message in Outlook Express and then File > Print and see what the properties are for the printer. All you are doing here is ensuring that the printer is the correct one and has not defaulted to some other printer just in that program.

I would also check your Text Encoding by going View > Encoding > we have ours set to Western European ISO though this should not affect the printing.

Virus? Possible but I would have assumed it would affect printing of anything.

Drastic last step and that is to uninstall the printer and reinstall and see if that cures the problem.

121441 2003-02-16 01:21:00 Many thanks Gordon. Tried your sugestions, everything seems OK, correct printer (HP LaserJet 5L) is set as default. Western European the set language; and I have already uninstalled the printer, without success

121442 2003-02-16 01:35:00 A ghosted OS is really intended to be installed on the same computer (or a set of identical systems in a system rollout) . If the hardware is different, things might not work .

Windows should be installed on the actual hardware it is to be used on . That's why the installation sytem exists . I'm sure MS would love to be able to distribute a single big file which could be uncompressed and run on any hardware .

I'd be inclined to reinstall the OS .

121443 2003-02-17 11:59:00 Hmm some guesses/things to test:

1. double check the printer in self test works

I understand you said it previously worked with another application but things can change and i would recommend this for testing purposes of perhaps similair to a standard diagnostic routine. If this fails check with the manual or support site or otherwise for the printer

2. Enter the printers folder and print a test page from the printer to ensure the driver works

If this fails look for a new driver, new cable, printer port loopback test
If this passes try testing the printer on another machine if possible to determine if the interface to the printer may be experiencing difficulty

3. If it is only the application that fails from here: sure you could reinstall the o/s but i would be more inclined to reinstall the application first or repair the application, software permitting. Uninstall then reinstall may restore more options to the 'correct' defaults

4. If the software uninstall/reinstall fails then perhaps consider a reinstall of windows or other options beyond the scope of this message.

121444 2003-02-17 20:35:00 Thanks Captive, This is puzzling, the printer test page comes through as well as it ever did; when I print a "Windows 98 Printer Test Page" the Windows splash and Windows 98 printer test page prints ok the rest is a jumbled series of letters. eg first line: Frqjudwxodwlrqv$

An attempt to print off your reply met with the same jumbled letters, if I copied it to Word Pad and changed the type face to Arial it printed exactly as your response.

The problem is only with Outlook Express, the others Word Processing programs print OK, grateful for any suggestions

121445 2003-02-17 22:10:00 For troubleshooting sake try a new driver, as the driver could be corrupt and additionally a new driver might restore some of the default settings.

Let me know how you get on

A new printer driver solved the problem, everything is OK Thanks, Edgar
